For the past 2 months I have been sick on and off I have had post nasal drip for about 3 weeks and recently my throat has started to hurt and eating is difficult I feel like where my nose meets my throat is full of snot and when I eat I have the sensation of food sticking in my throat Last week I went to the dr to see if I had strep because my tonsils felt swollen. Dr said it was virus and to wait it out. Yesterday I went to urgent care because my throat was still bugging me and she said I has a sinus infection and gave me antibiotics which I haven,t filled yet.
I feel tired and run down b I should take the antibiotics right? Too much dr google has made me question using them but these symptoms have been dragging on. What makes me doubt the sinus infecton is lack of yellow/ green mucus. I have had tons of clear for over a month but only a Few sightings off the colored stuff.
As I type I realize I sound crazy! I should just fill the antibiotics - the main reason is I haven't had a chance to get to the pharmacy
Re: Let's hear your medical opinions
I mean, take the antibiotics??
Why would you hesitate? If you do have a virus, they won't help, but at least you can rule out if you have an infection.
Get thee to a pharmacy.

Not worse at night. Ear hurts sometimes
The most annoying is the eating. It's been days since I have eaten a full meal
There isn't much point in seeking medical care if you don't want to take antibiotics.
You have some pretty serious inflammation going on. Understand this is actually a good thing, it is proof your body's immune system is actively fighting off your infection. I'm sure you wish that it would do it's job faster though. You may actually have a *lovely* virus/bacteria combo going on, where because your body was sick for so long fighting the virus, an opportunistic bacterial infection moved in as well. Sucks.
I can't think of a single antibiotic a Doc would prescribe that you shouldn't go ahead and take given your lingering and unpleasant symptoms. Antibiotics do tend to be given out like candy, but at this point I would want to drop that napalm just to wipe out everything you could. If you are prone to yeast infections you may run into some trouble down there because antibiotics do tend to wipe out everything including good bacteria, which can throw off the Flora balance for a while. But given your head symptoms, probably worth the risk.
Take the pills, AS PRESCRIBED. DO NOT STOP until you have taken them all. This is extremely important, as taking half a bottle then quitting when you feel better could leave you with a new antibiotic resistant colony inside you.
You need to GET SOME REST. I cannot stress this enough. Sometimes people think they can just take a pill and feel better and not have to rest their bodies to recover. Rest really is the best medicine. It lets your body devote resources away from things like walking and what-not and move them to your immune system. I've known plenty of people who had illnesses that lingered because they just wouldn't slow down their lives to get well.
Well, part of this comes from people going to Urgent Care and not wanting to leave empty handed. I've heard rumors of Doctors actually writing prescriptions for placebos like vitamin pills for patients with viral infections who were adamant about not accepting "You have a virus. Go home, rest, drink plenty of fluids." It's pretty funny how you can say things like "This will probably help you feel better" and give a prescription for Vitamins. I mean, it couldn't hurt, right? Even better would be handing the patient "samples" of sugar pills, although that's probably unethical.
I assumed they ran the cultures in this specific case, but maybe they didn't. I'm actually ok with "better safe than sorry" when dealing with gnarly bad infections.
No, don't take the antibiotics.
Get some herbal remedies, take steamy showers, use a nettie pot, maybe take some bendryl to help dry up. Drink lots of fluids. It ain't rocket surgery.
You said exactly what I needed to hear. I want to sit and cry because if feel so crappy all over but there isn't one thing that is in agony. Like my throat isn't on fire, I have a headache but it isnt throbbing I guess I am hung up on the fact that I should feel super sick for antibiotics but this has been dragging on for weeks
Advice like rest and drink lots of fluids? I mean, really?
Someone pass a sweater, hell has frozen over. This is what I was getting at. Whether you (the general "you") agrees with taking antibiotics or not, the issue is that seeking medical help kinda implies that you want them to fix your issue for you. It's not like there are levels to the help they can offer. They can give you meds or give you nothing but a bill and send you on your way. You kinda know that going in.
Have you garagled with hot salt water? Have you Swabbed over your tonsils with a qtip dipped in listerine? Have you used a nettie pot? Again, what have you done to help yourself?
What advice is your doctor giving you that you don't know at your age?
naps. water. immune system boosting tea. and time. we aren't machines, just because being sick is inconveinent doesn't mean we can ignore.
I don't disagree but I think most people know that this is an option before they go to the doctor/urgent care, right? So if you don't want meds, try all that stuff. If you've tried it and it doesn't work and/or you really think what you have is abx worthy, I would think you would be hoping for abx, kwim?
I have had throat issues for the past few months too. Mine feels raw, dry, burning, snotty, and like there is something caught in there. I am constantly feeling like I have to clear my throat.
I am trying to get my PCP to refer me to an ENT as I type.
I hope you get some relief soon!
Have you been tested for allergies?
And all antibiotics are going to do if you have a virus is help create antibiotic resistance.
Drs prescribing antibiotics when they don't know wtf theyre giving them for really really really pisses me off
I'm curious of specific herbal remedy recommendations. There are some that can help ease symptoms and aid rest, but none that I know of that have serious anti-bacterial properties. Steamy showers are nice to help ease the symptoms, but when you've been fighting something for weeks sometimes you do need a bigger weapon.
no, I'm thinking about your saying why go to the doctor if you don't want antibiotics. How do you know you need antibiotics.
You can mostly avoid antibiotics unless its turning into a serious infection, in which case you would be in pretty bad shape, fever, pain, and whatnot. If you have white spots on your throat, you can cure that at home. If you have yellow and green snot, you can cure that at home.
Garlic and GSE are both quite strong antibacterials.
I have been using a humidifier for 2 months. I have been drinking hot liquids I have gargles with salt water I have eaten only ice cream for meals I have taken mucinex for almost 2 months I go to bed early when I can
I have been waiting it out but it seems to be getting worse throat starting bugging me Wednesday of last week. Not even a bit better today
I know, its just too much work. *whines*
Ice cream? Sugar feeds infections and lowers your immune system.
Ice cream only for meals? Seriously?
Loading yourself with sugar and empty calories sounds like a brilliant way to help yourself. Nevermind the fact that dairy increases inflammation.
I'm impressed with myself I've managed to go this far without using the phrase snake oil.
Had to look up GSE. Looks like the independent research has shown it to be a dud except when applied directly to cultures, and just about any oil will kill cultures when applies directly. Garlic is freaking delicious and I highly suggest eating as much of it as possible for culinary reasons. But don't eat it thinking it's anything but a delicious, delicious placebo.
Yeah, I would stay away from dairy. Eating like crap is only going to make you feel worse if you are sick.
GSE isnt an oil. Enjoy your antibiotics. I haven't had one since I was 16, and my children have never had them. Antedotal I know, but I'm going to keep on with my snake oil remedies.
