High-Risk Pregnancy

How much insulin are you taking?

I feel like I'm taking so much! I'm 35 weeks and have been on insulin for almost 2 months and have five injections a day. It changes a bit each week with my doc but right now I'm taking Novolin N - morning 20 units, night 60 units. And Novolin R with each meal - breakfast 12, lunch 7, dinner 28. Is that a lot???? What are you taking, if you feel comfortable sharing.

  • everyone is different in how much insulin they need, especially toward the end of pregnancy. All those pesky hormones are making you more and more resistant. I am on a pump (type 1) so my needs fluctuate based on what I am eating, but I take a total number of 100-150 units per day.

  • I have 5 injections a day as well. I have an injection of Humulin N (5units) in the morn and again at night (2units). Then with each meal, I have Humalog (7/9/8 units). These all change on a weekly basis...up and down. I was told not to worry about the amounts I take and they will increase with the pregnancy as the placenta becomes immune to it as I get further along. I have been injecting since I was 15 weeks, still have another 11 weeks to go :(

I take 1 u per 5-9 carbs, depending on the time of day...so that is 2-3x my normal amount, which as others say will drop back to normal as soon as the placenta is gone.

No offense to you, but odd how they called you brittle...I thought they stopped using that term back in the 80's!

  • I'm type 1.  Before getting pregnant, I was taking about 30 units a day.  Now I'm around 75 and it seems to be climbing every day.

I thought so too!  My case is really weird though - I'm T2 (pre-pregnancy), was not insulin dependent prior to pregnancy, and I have to take A LOT of insulin but I respond to it really well - my A1c is 5.1.  Apparently it is harder to get those kind of levels with a T2.  Who knows.
