We're currently using an old radio set to static. Works for us... I keep thinking we should buy a sound machine, but it's hard to justify even $20 when this is working perfectly for us
We also have a simple one, it's the First Years Sounds For Silence
- we use it in her nursery for sleeping on the white noise settings, and I use the Mozart music setting for nursing and diaper changes. We even take this noise machine on road trips with us! We just use an adapter that allows us to plug into the "cigarette" outlet (sorry, I don't know what it's really called).
There was another post on this topic not too long ago and many people recommended the HomeMedics Sound Spa. including myself it's only 20 at Walmart or bed bath and beyond.
I used an old iPod and an iHome alarm clock we had in our guest room (that became the nursery). I just purchased a white noise song off iTunes and put that on repeat.

We have this one: https://www.amazon.com/HoMedics-SS-2000E-Nature-Sounds-Machine/dp/B000F3QG0U/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1354546863&sr=8-7&keywords=noise+machine
No fancy projector or anything. Just noise, which is all we need.
