How much do you spent on your parent/IL's at Christmas?

As a couple or individually.

Re: How much do you spent on your parent/IL's at Christmas?

  • We give my IL's money and they give us money for our kids so it is a wash & the most ridiculous thing ever that I won't even get into.

For my mom, I spend about $250 or more depending one what gifts we do that year on my mom when all is said & done. My father died 3 yrs ago and so my bro & I really try to give her things that she likes & can use and she is extremely generous to us, our spouses & my kids so I actually feel badly that we don't spend more but she is not very easy to shop for LOL.

  • I do around $75-100 for my mom b/c she takes DD to school and picks her up from school every day for me. I do about $30-50 for the rest.

  • My sister's and I usually go in on something big for my mom, because she does a lot for us.  My portion is usually around $100-150.  Sometimes my stepdad's gift is included with my mom's, but sometimes it is separate and I spend $30-50.  I usually spend $40-60 on my dad and stepmom.  My ILs don't celebrate.

  • Usually $75-$100 each couple.
  • I split my parents' gift with my brother and sister.  It depends on what we get them, but it's usually something technology related since they have no idea how to buy that stuff themselves.  It probably ranges from $50-100 each.

DH handles FIL's gift, and I just realized I have no idea how much he spends....I'm guessing around $100.  I am usually in charge of MIL's gift and I spend about $100.

  • We don't spend a lot on my parents/in laws--not because we don't budget for it but because they are both REALLY hard to buy for. My parents literally have EVERYTHING that they could need/want. And my MIL doesn't want anything. I mean it seriously takes me a good 3-4 months to get a gift idea for my mom, my dad and my MIL.

My dad is usually a book--because he loves to read and we can usually find a book he doesn't have. He refuses to get an e-reader though. My mom collects anything with hands, so I try to find something that she doesn't have--which is nearly impossible.

My DH usually hands his mom's gift--so it varies from year to year. Honestly we don't have a set amount that we spend on everyone, some years the gifts are 15-20; other years 75-100; however we do try to get something that they would really like.

  • My Dad when he's around I spend about $50-75. He travels so I hardly see him (widowed for 10 year).

ILs, we spend about $50-75 individually or $150 as a couple depending on the year.

BIL we spend about $75 and his GF about $25.

My sister and her husband, we spend about $75 on them, as I do gifts for the little ones.

  • Lurking from the baby boards because I just realized toddler boards are interesting and topics not beaten to death for me :-)

My side does a name exchange with my siblings and parents, we've been doing it for 20 years. The limit is $50. For the inlaws we do small token gifts, so $10-15. For MIL I usually make an updated photobook that I get for free plus $8 shipping. They are very well off and we in the SAHM, raising two kids, saving for college and weddings years, so they've asked us not to do much for them. Spending time together is most important in our families and gift giving is kept limited (except from Grandparents to Grandchildren, they can't help themselves).

  • Yikes, I feel like a cheapskate. We spent $20 each on my in-laws, $25 for my dad and nothing for my mom (we do a secret santa with her and my siblings and we didn't draw her name this year).

  • Don't worry about feeling like a cheapskate, BrittKav! We set a limit of $50 per parent and my mom still thinks that's too much!

We usually get my FIL golf-related items or a GC for electronics and MIL jewelry or a GC to a clothing store. My folks are harder to shop for, but it's usually a shirt for my dad and my mom asks for varies kitchen items of a GC for her Nook.

  • We don't buy my mom and her husband anything (they don't get us anything either).  I wish the rest of my family would do this as well, but they don't...

My MIL is very involved with the kids...she's our main babysitter, helps out frequently in the evenings, won't say no and often cancels plans last minute if we need her for something.  She's a very selfless woman.  We don't pay her, so we are going to spend more than we usually do on her for Christmas.  It will probably be $200+.  Everyone else, we usually spend $25-$50 per person.

That is what I was thinking looking through this thread. I usually spend about $30 on each parent/IL. This year DS is making them ornaments as well.

  • About 50-75 each parent.  DH splits it with his siblings so sometimes a little less, but they do so much for us and the kids that we are probably going to spend a little more this year.

  • All our parents are divorced and we do around $60 each.
