Can 3-4 yr olds use a jump rope?

This sounds like the dumbest question but dd asked me to put a jump rope on her Santa list.... I asked if she use done at school and she said no. I cannot picture kids using a jump rope until like 5 but maybe I am underestimating...if she cannot use it in some way I picture it just being whipped around and them both tugging on it and dragging it around and I will pass on that :) .... Thanks.

  • DD has a jump rope and general play involves her holding one handle and DS holding the other handle and them running through the house, lol. She does occasionally hold it correctly, jump over, but then doesn't have the coordination or skill to swing it over her head and around. She loves owning it... I think because its one of the " mousekersizes" Minnie does.

  • DD1 is able to use ours for everything BUT jumping rope.  You can find one for $1 but I usually disappear ours after 30 minutes.

  • I got my DD one when she turned 4 and she gets what she's supposed to do but does it in very slow motion with stepping over the rope, not jumping. I remember playing jump rope at recess time in 1st grade so I think it's more of a 5 or 6 year old skill.

  • My 2 year old plays with a jump rope all the time.  She doesn't know how to use it the traditional way (jumping rope), but she does love playing snake and laying it out on the floor to hop over.

This is what I was picturing in my head... in my house this will lead to someone getting hurt or massive fighting & me having to take it away 99% of the time so I think that Santa will not remember to get this this year...

  • Most of my first grade (6-7yo) students are learning to jump rope or have just acquired the skill in the past year.
