Adoption

Starting on the journey towards adoption

My husband and I have been looking into adoption for a while but are now more serious about starting the process. It seems like there is SO much information out there, I don't even know where to start. I have looked at so many websites/books, I feel like I might go cross eyed. We would be open to domestic or international, ideally infant, or <2 years old. Is it best to attend an informational meeting to get info? We are in the Chicago area. I am hoping that some of you who have gone through this process have a better idea of where to start. Its a little overwhelming.

Any help is appreciated :)

  • Hi and welcome!

If you haven't already, check out the FAQs at the top of the board. The resources may help you narrow things down.

Informational meetings are a great way to get a feel for an agency and get solid information. A lot of them are free.

And always feel free to ask specific questions here. We have all members of the triad on the board, and we have domestic and international mommas.

  • Welcome to the board!!  It really is overwhelming at first, I really liked the book You CAN Adopt because it explained the process of each of the different adoption types.  Also as PPs said the FAQs are a great place to start : )

  • Welcome! We did international adoption of a 2 year old boy from Russia and just brought him home last week! It is my understanding that for most international adoptions to adopt a child under 2 years old you should look into adopted a child with "special needs" (can be minor/correctable) OR be prepared for a long waiting period.

As for informational sessions, we did not end up going with Bethany Christian Services but I found their info sessions to be awesome and would recommend checking them out.  In our area they have them about 6 times per year.
