The Melissa and Doug ones have the entire backing as the magnet so it can't be something that is removed. I read on some of the reviews (a while ago) that there was lead in the paint though. Hopefully that has been something that has been fixed.
Another vote for the LeapFrog sets. We have two, a word builder and a letter sounds set, and the girls love them. I don't love 50+ letter magnets strewn all over the floor, but it's a small price to pay for keeping them entertained while I make dinner

The Dollar Tree also has thin wooden ones that the whole back is magnetic no small magnet, if you just want letters and not the leap frog toy. And they are only 1 not 20 if that matters, although we love our fridge farm and garage
