Coconut oil makes a great natural, nourishing alternative to lotions and is especially great for the diaper area to help prevent rashes. It also smells yummy. You can find it in the cooking oils section of Whole Foods and Trader Joe's.
As far as soaps, we started out using Burt's Bees shampoo and wash, but found it too drying with DD who has eczema and I am not a fan of the scent. Still looking for the ideal product.
We have several diaper creams in rotation. Aquaphor is a good moisturizer and preventative, but for an actual diaper rash we reach for Triple Paste as it works wonders in a day.
We use California Baby soap and lotion and Desitin diaper cream.
MFI and (now) AMA IVF 1 April 2011 - Cancelled IVF 1.5 July 2011 - MC IVF 2 October 2011 - BFP! *Identical Twin Boys born June 2012* Here we go again...IVF 3 is underway!
Honestly, I never used baby lotion on DD1 (she is now 5 1/2) once and she has never needed it. I used Desitin or Balmex for diaper rash.
When she was a toddler her eyes started getting red and irritated from her baby shampoo, and a friend of mine recommended trying products from Circle of Friends. We have loved them ever since: www.cofbath.com.
I would also try California Baby - their sunscreen is #1 !
For shampoo and lotion we use Earth Mama Angel Baby. We also use coconut oil. For redness we use CJ Butters but for more of a rash we use Triple Paste.
I got California baby wash and lotion, but I've read you really don't need to use it for a while. We are cloth diapering for the most part so I got the GroVia stick to be a skin protectant. I also got some A&D paste as a gift to use with disposable diapers if there is a bad rash.
We got a TON of J&J products for our baby shower (the head to toe wash, the shampoo, lotion - both regular sent and lavender sent). Literally, I don't think we'll have to buy any baby wash or lotions for 2 years!
DD is 4 months and I've only used the J&J No More Tears Head to Toe Wash. I have no complaints.
I just started to use the lotion in the past couple of weeks since the weather is getting colder and her skin was getting dry. I normally use it twice a day. My onyl complaint is that its not a thick lotion. Her skin in soft after I put it on, but half way through the day her skin feels dry again.
As far as diaper rash cream. She hasn't had a rash yet. Sometimes she'll get a little red, but I just let her air out for a bit.
She is starting to get a rash under her neck though. I keep it clean, but its dry and irritated. Not sure what I can / should put on that?

Baby Girl # 1
TTC Since January 2009
Reproductive Endocrinologist diagnosed us "Unexplained Infertility".
After 3 years . . . 3 IUIs . . . and 3 IVFs . . . our miracle GIRL arrived on August 6, 2012.
Baby Girl # 2 TTC Since June 2013 Got pregnant on our own without Fertility Treatments - January 2016! Thank you snow storm Jonas! EDD 10/15/16 At 20-week anatomy scan found IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction), and very low Amniotic Fluid. Now, I'm High Risk and have weekly ultrasounds to monitor fluid and growth. If baby runs out of room or is too growth restricted, they will deliver ASAP. My current goal is to make it to 28 weeks!
We use Little Twig
soap and lotion - the unscented kind. LO has super sensitive skin, so we have to be careful on everything. For diaper "creme" we use Granndma El's.
I use J&J Bathtime Wash (it smells AMAZING) with DS - and did when we first took him home. They have a lotion in the same smell.
As far as diaper cream - Peneten is the name brand and really good. I've found that the no-name equivalents are also pretty good.
When DS was a new-born I only used diaper cream if he looked a little red or rashy - no need to use it at every change. Now we use it at night because DS is in that diaper for the longest time.
