Contractions when active/standing

Hey Ladies-

Sorry for the duplicate post (also in 3rd Tri), but I really need all the input I can get.

Is anyone else getting contractions when they stand up or are active for periods of time, only to have them decrease and stop when seated, relaxed or laying down?

I can be standing, doing light activity like cooking or washing dishes, and my contractions will increase until they are only three to five minutes apart and about 45 seconds to a minute long. Today it has gotten to where they can be painful, like period cramps (or feeling like you have to poo). I have also had waves of nausea and diarrhea (TMI, sorry).

I will go sit down with my pitcher of water, and the contractions will decrease in intensity and slow to a stop within about 15 minutes. Unfortunately, drinking all this water makes me have to get up to pee every hour or so, and so the cycle of contractions is triggered.

I saw my OB for this on Wednesday, and I am going back tomorrow because the Nifedipine prescribed, and boosted to max dose this morning, is not still stopping this from happening.

Anyone else have this?? I am hoping these are just Braxton-Hicks from hell, and not actually pre-term labor.

Contractions (real ones) will not decrease in intensity or decrease when sitting down or drinking water. They will just keep getting stronger and longer. Hope this helps. Sorry for the weird multi quote... my computer freaked out. Anyways i know what you mean about the BHs. Mine are stronger when im doing activities and actually are still there when im sitting. they just aren't as close together when i drink more water. Keep hydrated and if you start to worry too much just ask your ob :)

  • Same thing happens to me and I am also taking Nifedipine on it for a month now. I asked my dr about it today and he checked me and said I was not dialated. He also said if they change in intensity when doing different activities they are just BHs. I would definitely ask your dr about it tomorrow because they may want to check you just to be sure. Good luck!

  • Almost every time I walk around or do something physical I start to get them (I've only timed them once, so I don't really know what the pattern is.)  When I sit, they decrease or go away, so I haven't really been worried about it. Mine generally aren't painful though.  Lately, I've had period-like cramps at different times in the day (not necessarily associated with the BH), and they make me more nervous than BH.

  • The difference between BH and labor contractions is that the latter will actually start doing work on your cervix.....so you def want to ask your OB to check that when you go in. Also, as PP mentioned, if they decrease in intensity w/ rest and water they are most likely BH. My sympathies....I have been getting BH since 18 wks and lately it's at the point where I can't even make the bed w/o contracting....take it easy mama!

  • Sounds like BH, real contractions shouldn't stop just because you're relaxing. I only feel BH when I'm out walking. Maybe don't go for a full pitcher of water to calm them because yes, a full bladder can start up BHs again.
  • I definitely have these, and have for a couple of weeks now.  I notice them when I'm stressed and hurrying, or carrying myself weird - like if I'm carrying stuff for work I can wear like a backpack and end up leaning forward because of it.  As PPs said, my dr. told me if they subside when I sit down or rest and have some water, they're likely nothing to worry about.  For me, I figure I'm carrying pretty low and everything is just getting strained...I really should get one of those support belts but I feel like I'll stop working soon and only have about a month left..

I had no idea about this and it makes sense. I started having BH just this week and its worse when my bladder is full or maybe I just notice it when my bladder is full....
