Thinking of names and nothing works with my new last name.

Hi guys,

I'm idk. one of these weird planner people. I do everything in advance. DH drags his feet to the last minute. We got married in May so my new letters are DSD now. DH's are TJD. I like older, more traditional names since they never lose style.

Girl names are so easy for me to think of but boy names are like stabbing my self. They're plain or not cute, ect.

So far I've worked out names like William/Matthew/Alexander/Abigail/Chloe/Zoe/Zachary

but even with the names I like, nothing goes with my last name, which is..Devlin. ugh.

Any type of opinions are highly valued

Re: Thinking of names and nothing works with my new last name.

  • I think they all sound fine with your last name! Just don't do anything rhymey like Devon, lol. I think anything with the an on in endings should be avoided. My last name ends in er, so we avoided names like Carter, Hunter, etc.

And I love all the boy names you picked, especially William. Actually, all three are family names of mine. Alexander is our boy MN if we have a boy. Matthew is a big family name; three Matthews including my husband, so of course I also love that.

  • I feel your pain! My last name is only one syllable, and every boy name I like is one syllable. They sound really lame together! Boo

  • We've been talking about names since I got my BFP lol we are definitely going with Natalie Ann if it's a girl and we are thinking Blake Edward if it's a boy.. I thought we'd settled on Everett for a boy, but DH is fickle. He can't stick with a name for more than a week. Lol

  • I like Maxwell Devlin. It sounds good to me

  • I feel you on the last name. I've always loved flower names, but part of ln is a color so I think it would be over the top.

  • Devlin is a cool last name. Seriously. Way better/easier to work with than mine. That said,

I'd nix William because I don't like the flow of the ending with the ending of Devlin.

Matthew is fine, just NMS. Alexander sounds nice. Zachary is okay.

I really dislike Abigail, but it sounds fine. Chloe is NMS, Zoe is cute.

None of these names are awful with the last name, though! Other suggestions:

boys- Jack, Michael, Patrick, Arthur, Sean, Graham, Edward

girls- Anna, Lily, Lucy, Eliza, Sabrina, Cora, Elisa, Moira

  • Try being a Phaneuf! LOL. like Fun-UF. We are thinking Fiona and Fynn short for Phineas. Delvin is a shorter name so a longer first name is good. Have you looked under your nationality, ancestors names? I just asked DH and he said Angel. Lol oh men....
  • I have to say Matthew and Zoe sound really good to me... of those ones you listed, those are my favorite and sound really nice with your last name.

  • I like the longer names since the last name is so much shorter but i'm still tossing them back and forth. The only one name i'm sure of is Tyler. It wont be happening since DH is a junior. Also, I'm looking more into greek or english names. They seem to be more i'm not sure, normal i suppose.

^^All of this! I think you don't think they sound well with your last name because it's new and weird to you in general. Trust me you will get used to it. Just say it outloud a lot.

  • I like your name choices! But when I saw your last name, I got to thinking about that show "According to Jim", with the neighbor The Devlins! If you havent seen it, google it, those episodes are hilarious!

  • DH and I have a dispute about how many syllables LN has.  According to him, I incorrectly pronounce a "silent e."  Hello!  Its there and I hate when LN is spelled wrong.

We have a "th" in our last name so Ethan, Matthew, etc are all off our list.  And our LN rhymes with "bridge" so Bridget which I love is out as well.

I think your last names is nice and short and won't be spelled wrong -- all pluses in my book.  I would just stay away from names like Devin.

  • I love William and Alexander. Both strong boy names with enough character. I don't think you have any bad names on your list!

  • I'm the same way! I got a baby name app and put TONS of girl names on my favorites but I didn't find any boy names I liked : the baby's last name will be one syllable so I'm definitely staying away from one syllable first names. I think contradicting syllables sound best e.g. One syllable first name with multisyllable LN or multisyllable first name with one syllable LN
  • I know right? I can look at a page of girl names and pick 10. After 18 pages of boy names, I might have 3(at most) that i like. They're so hard. And to make matters worse, every online gender test, chinese gender chart,  old wives tale, and funny feeling there is, everything points to a boy. So this name game will be most frustrating for me. If only DH hadnt said " whatever you pick, I will love." Not helpful. lol

  • I had a Kyle Devlin when I was teaching. There's also a Dennis Devlin memorial run where we live, in honor of an FDNY captain who dies in 9/11.  I think both names flow pretty nicely.

  • That's is my grandfathers name but for now we're trying not to do family names no matter how cute they are.Though since DH is heart set on a boy, the lack of name flowing between us may make up reconsider.

  • Dude, your last name is Devlin, I don't see the big deal?

I grew up with a boy whose last name was Butt

    You're fine.

  • WOW. That kid needs a sympathy pat on the back.

DH mainly said that his school nickname was Devil, so not much goes with that. I dont like the initial D for a last name and every name I pick just sounds wrong. But it is nice to know, there's worse out there.
