xp: white noise machine req please!

I need a recommendation for a sound or white noise machine. It's for my older two (2 and 3 yo). They used to have a fan in their room, but they were playing with it (which is dangerous, imo) so we took it out.

Now, they can hear EVERY SINGLE THING that happens in the house. Like, I can say DD's name from the living room and she hears it in the room with the door closed. I am certain the bathroom and walking by her room wakes her up sometimes so I want something to cover that noise.

The trick is I need it to run on battery, not be plugged in to the wall.

Recommendations?

  • The sleep sheep runs on batteries, but it will only play for 45 min.  Is there something around your house you can use?  DD's room is right off the kitchen, so we just turn on the kitchen exhaust fan.

Yeah, right now we turn on the bathroom fan, which I don't mind but DH hates that we have to have that on all the time (because it has the light on as well, just one switch).

  • We use the free white noise app for iPhone/iPod. We have a ridiculous amount of old ones, so we keep the oldest one in DS's room. There are plenty of portable speakers that run on batteries. Our house and street is very loud as well and DS rarely hears a thing.

  • Could you put a fan outside of their room? We use Marpac Sleepmate white noise machines, but they plug in to the wall. When I vacuum during nap time, I put an extra Marpac outside of DD's door and that works really well.
