Accessory Placenta

I just got back from my doctor appt for an AS.  The doc said I have an accesory placenta and I'm just wondering if any of you other ladies have been diagnosed or delivered with one? Anything I should worry about?

Re: Accessory Placenta

  • I don't know what that means!  I have an anterior placenta, which is pretty common, but I've never heard of "accessory" placenta.

basically it's like a small extra placenta attached to the regular placenta :)

  • oh, haha, literally an accessory.  Like a charm on a bracelet.  Did the doc seem concerned?

Hahaha. While I've never heard of this, and don't want to make light of your situation... I hope it's bedazzled.

And of course, totally a normal/non-threatening/etc. type condition

  • Doc wasn't concerned, she just said they will have to make sure it doesn't detach when the placenta is delivered.  Just kinda curious if anyone had gone through it before...however don't be jealous if your uterus didn't supply you with your own awesome accessory that may or may not be bedazzled or diamond encrusted, some of us are just lucky I guess....lol

I am so glad this is not a post about making jewelry from your placenta. SO GLAD.

You and I - same page. I totally thought that's what this was about.

I have no experience with this, but wanted to say that I hope it turns out to be NBD.

  • I thought this was an auto-correct issue! I have never heard of that, but I'm sure you'll be fine! Maybe you'll have a little extra monitoring or something.
  • You made me learn something new today!  I had no clue that existed.  From what I'm reading, I guess they can't really predict if it will cause issues, but if it does it would be at birth and it would mostly be in the "painful for mommy" category.  I guess for now it's just a cool extra thing!  Er...well...kinda neat.  Interesting.

  • Like PPs have said, hope it's nothing serious or problematic. I've never heard that particular term.

On a lighter note.. Not jewelry guys. It doubles as a coin purse.

    LOL!!!!
  • Maybe.  I had a two-lobe placenta (not sure if that's the same). I had it with my last and at the a/s this time the tech said I might have it again this time. She described it this way: as the uterus grows it stretches the placenta the parts in the middle sometime get stretched thinner, causing two-lobes.  After I delivered my son they did a quick ultrasound of my uterus to make sure both parts came out and then I was on pitocin for 24 hours.  Everything was fine.

  • And I just googled it and confirmed that your "accessory placenta" and my "two-lobe placenta" are the same.  So, yes.  I had it last time and might have it again this time.  No worries though :)  All is fine with me and my son.

  • I hate to add a third post, but the pitocin and u/s that I had might have also been because of the large fibroid I had.  So, you might not even need those.  They will inspect the placenta to make sure it all came out, but they do that anyway.
