I knew this was going to happen...

I have to go on a dairy free diet.  DS has been struggling with reflux that meds have helped with, but haven't cured.  We went to a specialist today and he wants me to see if taking dairy out of my diet with help DS's reflux since he's breastfed.  Part of me wants it to work so DS will get better without adding more medicine.  Part of me wants it not to work so I don't have to stop eating dairy for the next 6 months.

They gave me a list of ingredients to avoid and it's so overwhelming!  All I had for lunch is a banana and a handful of peanuts because everything in my pantry has dairy!  This is going to be a huge lifestyle change.  Luckily DH is going to do it with me since I'd probably just wrestle the dairy products right out of his hands if he ate them in front of me, lol.

DD is MSPI too.  I lost 3lbs the first week.  H and I got in a fight a few days in and he asked what my deal was and I yelled that I was f-ing hungry.  So yeah, it sucks for a while but you'll get the hang of it soon.  The first few trips to the grocery took for.ev.er. reading all the labels.  FYI - Oreo's are safe :-)

ETA - here's another post from the FA board with a list of snacks:

The breast feeding board has a great group of women who are mspi. You may want to look over there.

I dont breastfeed anymore so I cant really help but I give you major credit for changing your lifestyle! That would be really difficult for me as I eat a lot of dairy so good for you for doing that for your son, good luck with it and I hope it gets easier for you and your son gets better!

Oh man, good on you for taking that lifestyle change on. Dairy is my favorite food group lol. I think I could live on cheese, ice cream and yogurt. That would be a huge change for me. Good for you taking that bullet for your child!! Good luck!

I eliminated dairy a few times to try and treat my son's gas and reflux, but it didn't turn out to be the dairy causing the problem.

Is it just cow's milk that you have to eliminate? If so, goat and sheep cheese is delicious and helped me when I eliminated other dairy. Also there are some great non-dairy substitutes out there for cheese and milk. Good luck!

Thanks for the support, ladies!  Good to know that Oreos are safe, lol.  I guess I will have to learn to dip them into non-dairy milk Stick out tongue

EMO-mamma, after the initial change, were you able to maintain your weight and not be starving all the time?  Not that I'm complaining about losing weight, but I don't want to be that hungry!  And I don't want to buy a new set of skinny clothes, only to pack them up forever once I start eating cheese and ice cream again.

Dana&Pete, I have to eliminate all dairy products right now to see if it works.  I was doing some research, though, and it looks like goat milk and the milk from certain cows are less likely to cause problems, so I may try to work that back into my diet eventually.  I miss cheese already!

Except they contain soy lecithin so if you are also avoiding soy then they are a no no.

Hugs to the original poster. I am going on month 4 of eliminating dairy and soy from my diet and it does get better. It is so tough at first but worth it. I have also lost 10lbs!

You will also find that you feel better and look better after doing it.

    godairyfree.com is a great resource.

It definitely is a lifestyle change and it will really give you a whole new perspective about your eating habits in general and how much crap we consume. I definitely will make some permanent changes to my diet as a result of this and our whole family eats better because of it.

Thanks, xnbride.  Right now our GI specialist says only to eliminate dairy.  I am trying not to add a ton of soy into my diet as a replacement for dairy, but not cutting it out completely.  I'm not sure if that will be the next step or not.  Thanks for the website. I'll definitely check it out.  It's good to hear that this has been a positive experience for you and your family.

I've been dairy free since DS was 3 days.  I cried for the first day, then I just did my research and read labels ingredients and have been able to adjust.

The hardest has been pizza and chocolate.  My doc said that if dairy was not part of the top 5 ingredients I would be ok.  It is totally doable.  I tried Rice Milk and Almond milk and I preferred the almond milk.  Thank God for Oreos since it is one of the few desserts that don't have dairy.

    You can totally do it.

I am dairy, soy, nut and egg free. I had to be corn free for awhile too. I cried then. Luckily I was able to add corn back in. Dairy is hard, but cutting out the others too was super difficult. It's just how I live now. Holidays are hard though. I struggle to keep weight on. My size 0 jeans fall off me. Baby is doing good though!

    You can do it! :)

Wow! You're my hero!  Now I feel like a real wuss complaining about going dairy free, lol.  Actually, I've been doing it for three days now and it's not really that big of a deal.  I just have to meal plan a little more now and obviously read labels, but I don't miss dairy as much as I thought I would.

I was diary free for six months. Www.ohsheglows.com is how I survived. AND I lost a lot of weight and my pants were even big!

Now that it's back in my life, I'm slowly gaining back.. :(
