Another food question - biting off chunks

What types of foods, if any, do you let your LO have in big chunks to bite off her/himself?

As i mentioned in my prv post, I got DD some of those cheeto like puffs for babies and they are bigger so she bites off chunks and loves loves loves it.

My mom thinks I should start giving her bigger chunks for her to bite off herself (always under supervision of course) but I'm just too nervous... So wanted to hear what other moms are doing.

TIA!

Re: Another food question - biting off chunks

  • It depends on the chewability.  When I gave DS a hotdog, I cut it up smaller because biting chunks off meat is trickier than letting him bite chunks off of bread.  He might have been ok, but better safe than sorry.  He did handle a hard pizza crust pretty well today though.

He sometimes bites off more than he can chew, but he's always supervised while eating (and within arm's reach most of the time).  If I notice he's taken a big bite, I take away what he's eating so he can work on that without shoving more in his mouth.  He's gotten pretty good at regulating how much he puts in his mouth at one time.  I usually still shred his meat, but he can chomp through a stick of celery and bite off bread and other softer items like banana and squash.

thanks namara! So maybe start with softer stuff like bananas is a good idea! DD is actually pretty good about biting off pieces, she even tries to do that with her cheerios. I think it's just another thing she figured out she can do. So I can probably let her explore that for a bit.

  • We have been doing baby led weaning with dd and she LOVES taking bites. Ever since she got her front teeth in she's been going to town on anything we give her that has to be bitten into. The first foods we gave her she had to take bites of were bananas, avocado, soft steamed veggies, etc. Now she's biting off chunks of chicken and bread with no problem.
