Parenting after a Loss

6w and STTN?!

Not that I'm complaining (though my boobs are) but isn't 6 weeks a bit early for Charlie to start sleeping through the night? Tuesday night she slept from 10:30 until about quarter til 5. Last night she slept from before midnight until 6:15!!! I could get spoiled this way but of course now I'm worried that it's too early and I should be waking her to make sure she's eating enough.

  • Alice was sttn just shy of six weeks. As long as she doesn't have gaining issues, she's fine. Congrats!

  • DD started STTN between 6 and 7 weeks! It was way harder on my boobs than it was on her. I just tried to trust that if she was hungry, she'd let me know. And when she hit her 3 month growth spurt, she totally did :)

I knew I could count on you t keep me sane... as scary as that may seem ;-)

I kind if figured that was the case but I needed to hear it. She has definitely not had any gaining issues so far. By her 1 month check up she had gained 2.5lbs. I guess we'll just wait for her next check up and see how she's doing.

We also changed her bedtime routine and I wonder if she's getting better rest now. We used to not really have much of a routine. She would spend the evening dozing and nursing in my lap until I was ready to go to bed and hen I would put her in her crib if she was asleep or lay down and nurse her if she was awake then move her to her crib if I was still awake. Now DH and I have decided to kick her out of our bed and try to ensure some alone time for us in the evenings so I lay her down at about 9;30 with just a night light on after the big kids are settled into bed. She usually talks to herself for about half an hour and then wants to nurse. Then I lay her back down and we go through a couple cycles of her talking to herself then wanting rocked until she talks herself to sleep. (usually only takes 1-2 cycles)

  • DS was STTN by then, too.. He did 11-5, and then back to sleep again until 9.. it was glorious!  Around 8-9 weeks, we moved up his bedtime to 8:30 instead of 11, and he'd still sleep until 5.. and then, before his 3 month appointment he was sleeping from 8-8:30pm until 7-8am!  It's wonderful when they sleep well :)

  • My dd started sleeping consistently 5-6 hour stretches at 7 weeks.  As long as there are no issues with weight gain, I wouldn't worry.  Also if she continues to sleep consistently long stretches your boobs will adjust and not bother you.

  • I'm jealous! DD still consistently wakes up hungry every 3 hours. She had one 5 hour stretch a couple weeks ago, but it was a fluke.

  • Totally jealous too!  My toddler still gets up at night.  My 5 week old isn't even close to STTN.  His longest stretch has been 3 1/2 or 4 hours.  It's OK though, somehow with the 2nd kid I can function on little sleep.  Don't know what changed, maybe my body just knows I can't nap during the day with a toddler, esp since she decided she doesn't want to nap anymore.  Ugh =)

  • DD was STTN at 6 weeks as well.  In our case, it has ebb and flowed where she STTN and then went through a few wakeful periods.  As long as she is gaining weight well, let that baby sleep!

  • For the record, I'm currently giving you all the stink eye of envy. We're still 2-3 hour stretches, and his 1 1/2 - 2 hour stretches all seem to occur on my shift. We've had 3 fluke 4 hour stretches over the last few weeks, but that's it.
