Baby Names

Violet and Lily

Quick question:

After watching Charlie Brown's Christmas last night my husband has decided that he wants to put the name Violet at the top of our short list.  At first I thought it was a great suggestion - it is an older name and very pretty which is our style.

But this morning I realized it is a also a flower name like our first daughter, Lily. I told my husband that I didn't want a flower theme. He didn't agree. His logic was this: "our daughter is named after his grandmother not the flower. So it is not a flower theme".

So opinions: Is Lily and Violet a little to matchy or themey?  To help in comparison our son's name is Max. We're obviously very early in the process but I'm interested in folks opinions.

Mom to three beautiful preemies:

Lily born at 27 wks: 2 lbs 4 oz.
Max born at 27 wks: 2 lbs 2 oz.
Glenn born at 31 wks: 3 lbs 9 oz.

Re: Violet and Lily

  • The flower thing definitely comes through loud and clear. Whether or not it really matters, I don't know. It is a negative, but not necessarily a reason to rule out the name if you don't have other good options that you both like.

    Having Max in there helps.

  • I would definitely think you were going with a flower theme, but I wouldn't side-eye you. Lily and Vilolet are pretty names.

  • Yes, it is themey, but I think it is sweet and it doesn't bother me.

  • Yes, too themey.

Whether or not Lily was named after a person, it's still a flower name.

I love Violet, but with sister Lily it would only be a MN option.

  • I think it's okay to use. My great-grandma was Lily and her daughter (my grandma) was named Rose. I know it's not the same, but no one ever commented on it.

  • It's a little themey but they're both quite popular so I could see someone just happening to love them separately and not wanting a flower theme.  And Max isn't botanical so I think it's fine.  Now, if he were Leaf or River or something I'd definitely say there's a nature trend going on.

They are both beautiful names but I hate themes like that. I knew girls Violet, Lily and Rose, it always eerked me. Sorry.

  • love love love both names

and yes, the "theme" is obvious, but I wouldn't let it deter you.. especially with Max in the mix.

  • Both names are very pretty, but it's definitely "themey". What if you use Violet as the MN?
  • I think it's a little too themey.

  • I think they are both beautiful names.   The theme dosent bother me at all, because they arent going to go through the rest of their lives always being introduced together.

    This.

Also, I would consider whether you think you might have more children. If you have any more girls, would you feel compelled to continue with flower names? I think three would be a bit much. Something to think about.

  • I don't think  it's too themey because you have a Max in there. If you had wanted to be matchy or themey, you would have done it with your twins.

  • I think it's fine. They're both beautiful, non-made up names.
