TTC After a Loss

Secondary Recurrent Miscarriage?

I guess this is where I would fall. This is the term for when you have at least one successful pregnancy and then experience multiple losses in a row. I was just wondering who out there might be in this same boat? What kind of treatments, if any, have you been trying? If you're comfortable, share your age?

I wish I could isolate my age as a factor in my repeated losses. I don't know if the recurrent losses are just due to my age and having poor egg quality now. Or if there could be something else at play such as immunological issues or scarring on my ute or maybe just the low progesterone. Anyway, I will have testing coming up to help answer some of this I hope. But just looking for any ladies out there in a similar situation.

TIA and hugs to all this morning.

  • I am so sorry for your losses and that you find yourself here again.

    **DD mentioned below**

I have a DD who we had no trouble conceiving and carrying, and have had nothing but losses since TTC #2. I've had all the repeat loss testing done and general fertility testing, and they did find that I have low AMH (an indicator of not a lot of eggs left). This means I have more of a chance of releasing an abnormal egg each month. Two different specialists have recommended IVF, so after a year and a half this heartache, we're going to do IVF in January.

As far as age, I was 32 when I conceived DD and 33 when she was born. We started TTC #2 when I was 35 and I'm 36 now. I'm sure age does play a part in this for me, but unfortunately I cant change it. :(

There's some good info in the blot about repeat loss testing. Also, maybe post on the Secondary IF board? All the ladies there have had a successful pregnancy and our struggling with #2 (or more). HTH!

  • I am so sorry for your losses. I would also fall into this category. I had a miscarriage before DS, had DS, and am now here in RPL hell. I have not had any diagnosis that firmly lead to a reason for our losses and the only treatment I am on is extra folic acid and progesterone at 3dpo. I am 27. I wish I could offer more information or suggestions. But I do know how you feel and where you're at.

  • I forgot to add a suggestion. Try the secondary infertility board. There are a few RPL mommas over there.

  • That's where I am now. My OB thinks that my losses were likely flukes, we are are starting all the repeat loss testing next week. I was 26 when I had DS and I'm 28 now. Both my OB and the RE I met with said that the fact that I have had one successful pregnancy is the best indicator that we can be successful. Both of my losses were chromosomally abnormal which the RE said could mean that one of us carries a genetic mutation. Obviously, our bodies are capable of producing a healthy child together, but it may take more tries to get the right combination. I'm going through a battery of blood tests next week, so we will see what the results are.

  • Thank you so much for all of your feedback and support. I REALLY appreciate it. I didn't even realize there was a secondary IF board!! Thanks for the heads up on that! And thanks again for sharing your support and stories. Every moment I treasure getting to be a mamma and give him extra squeezes and hugs all the time because I feel so blessed. I just hope we can give him a little brother or sister. Thanks again so much everyone.

  • I am in that boat. I have had 5 miscarriages and 1 successful pregnancy.  ( 1 loss before my DS and 4 after my DS).  I am 35.  My RE did find a uterine septum which was fixed in May ( who knows if that really caused all my M/C's... as I had another M/C a chemical pregnancy after the surgery).... all other testing came back normal.  Never had an SA done on my husband but I am thinking since everything else came back normal we may be dealing with sperm morphology issues ( DH is 39)... but possible egg quality issues too

  • Thanks so much again all - I wish none of us were going through this, but it helps so much to connect with others that are having similar challenges.  It makes me feel not as alone when all around me are friends who have now already had their second children... and who are probably just as tired of telling me how sorry they are and that I am in their thoughts and prayers as I am of telling them of another loss.

I have actually narrowed it down to one person I think I will share any of this journey with now other than my husband.  Not even my family - my BFF, who is like my sister.  She is the only one who has truly been so supportive even though she hasn't had these kinds of problems.  I used to think talking to people - a select few though - would be a great idea to make me feel supported.  But after this most recent upcoming loss - I just can't bear to hear any more of the same comments.  And then there are those, who are genuinely sweet and intelligent - but they say, "Oh, well maybe you just need to stop testing and trying so hard and it will just happen!"  Like waving a magic wand right??  Ugh.  I know they mean well and if I was even five years younger I might have time to do that, but at my age I just don't have a month to waste.

LSzwaya - Thanks for touching base - I'm so sorry you're going through this hell too.  But I have to say your siggy pic is GREAT!  Love the little robot!

RunningGal - Good luck with all your tests.  I hope they come back with some helpful info for you.  I would think the same thing - that since I have a healthy child that there wouldn't be any genetic mutation problem.  I didn't know that it could still exist even if you have a healthy child.  Thanks for sharing that - I really hope you get some answers from the round of tests coming up.

baby101010 - I'm sorry you're in this boat too.  I had no idea that you could have a uterine septum after having a healthy pregnancy.  Thanks for posting about it.  I will be keeping you in my thoughts as well for that sticky bean!
