Transporting breastmilk on a plane

Going out of town for the weekend without baby:( Plan on pumping and would hate to let that liquid gold go to waste. Any info on bringing it back with me on the plane is appreciated!

  • I did this a lot. Do you have the medela (or another company's) bottle storage freezer pack? The one with the curves? You can bring that on the plane, but it has to be frozen solid. It will keep the milk cold for 12 hours in an insulated bag. When you go through security just tell them you have breast milk and they will take it aside and open a bottle and wave this little piece of paper above it to test it. Then it's over. It's not so bad. Good luck!

  • I haven't had any problems - I just tell them as I put it on the scanner.  Note that you do need to make sure your ice pack is frozen when it goes through security.  But the TSA was great about it when I went through - no issues, and they didn't have to open the bottles or anything to check them.

  • I used my own travel cooler and used baggies with ice. One airport didn't even ask me to open it. I was just upfront about it and they were fine. Another airport had to wave the test strip over it but let me open the bottles and seemed to appreciate me taking control of the bottles. The main thing is to have a well-insulated cooler and you'll be fine.
