Tummy Time

How do you get your kid to like it?

Mine hates it. Hates. I've tried it all; toys, laying in front of him, and he eventually just lays his face in the ground and cries.

I don't do it as often as we should because of this. How often are you doing tummy time? for how long?

Re: Tummy Time

  • Eli hated it so we didn't do it often. I got him a Boppy last week and set up some of our Christmas animals in front of him that sing and dance around. I guess he found those entertaining enough and tummy time has been tear-free ever since. Honestly, it's like a switch got flipped. We went from frustration and crying in less than two minutes to 20 minutes or more at a time propped up on the Boppy (until he starts trying to crawl, which results in him scooting himself off either backwards or forwards). Yesterday I put him on his tummy to moisture him (since his eczema is bad again) and he was quite happy on his blanket on the floor the whole time. I put him on floor a couple of times today and he rolled over!

I think sometimes tummy time can be a little like potty-training: you can try and try and try, but when they're ready to do it, they'll do it. Sorry, I know that's no help.

  • we started tummy time almost from day one had he has never really minded it. At first the most he would do is 5 min but now he loves it. Have you tried laying him on your chest for tummy time? He might like that he can look directly down at your face. Other wise I think the best way to do is is in shot intervals many times a day.

  • Don't remember who mentioned this but some one recommended using the paci to keep them happy and it did help a lot! Still no lasting more than 2 or 3 minutes but better than 30 seconds! Also during DD photo session today the photographer put her down in her tummy on a really long piled furry rug that was really soft! She loved it. She kept playing with her hands in it and it distracted her from the fact that she was on her tummy!

  • DD went from 2 minutes of tummy time to almost 30 minutes with us using a paci. She also did 15 minutes today so it's changed dramatically for us = ) I try to do tummy time twice a day.

  • I put LO on his tummy after each diaper change.

  • I try for once a day. She will tolerate it if she can lay on her side. The lasts on her tummy for all of 5 minutes, if that. So instead I lay her on my chest and have her push up to look at me. We do other things to keep her active.

  • B hates it but I still try a few minutes here and there everyday.
  • Liam hates it. He can now roll over tummy to back so as soon as he's on his belly he rolls. He said "to hell with this belly crap "
  • I got DS the tummy time boppy and it has helped a LITTLE. Haven't tried the pacifier yet...
  • Henry hates it. But it's getting better slowly. If I get him while he's fully awake and happy he'll go about 5 minutes now (up from 30 seconds about 2 months ago). It's a s.l.o.w. process. I think like PP said it's like potty training. When they are ready they are ready. Boo. Keep at it :) GL!

  • The only way DD will tolerate tummy time at home is on my chest, and it only works for a couple of minutes.  I recently asked my DC provider how DD responds to it during the day and surprisingly she said that not only does DD not mind it, but she loves sitting up on the boppy.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but as long as she's getting (and liking) it at daycare I try to focus on making sure she gets it on the weekends and when I can remember during the week.
