How do I know if I'm having supply issues?

DS had his 6 month check up today and has been slow to gain weight as of late.  I EBF and don't pump at all, so I have no way of gauging whether my supply has dropped.  I have noticed that DS has been nursing a lot longer at night and doesn't seem to be swallowing much.  I just figured it was comfort nursing but now I'm wondering if he's really trying to nurse and he's not getting much.  Any advice?

  • It's normal for ebf babies to slow down in weight gain around six months. All the new activity and such.

  • As said above, it's normal for breastfed babies to start to gain weight slower around 6 months due to their new amount of movement.

If you start to notice less wet/dirty diapers than normal or if your LO seems consistently fussy even after eating, those could be signs of a supply issue. But if the only "issue" is a slowed down rate of weight gain, I wouldn't worry, especially if your LO is still growing more or less along the same curve

  • Thanks ladies.  He actually had another doctor's appointment today and, when they weighed him, it was almost a pound more than yesterday's weight.  I'm thinking it's possible that the scale was just off.
