Unreasonable worry - food related

I don't know why I'm having a little freakout about this.

Hope somebody kind of gets where I'm coming from even if I'm being too dramatic. I just need to vent...

DD started solids when she was 5.5 months. I gave her little soft chicken and fish bits and she loved it. She to this day prefers chunky food over purees. But she won't eat any veggies as finger foods. That has to bee pureed and she will only eat the Plum brand that always has veggies mixed in with some fruit. She loves this stuff! But I can't be feeding her this all the time. I for some reason am totally panicking that she will not want to eat any veggies.

And if she's having meat with her meal she won't eat much of anything else if anything at all. She's such a little meat lover! She does like cheese, she'll eat some noodles too but will give up quickly.

I know she's only 10 months and still learning it all but I'm so worried she'll be just like DH who only eats meat and potatoes and maybe some corn. I always said I'll never cook a separate meal for my child and she will eat what we are eating and now I'm having nightmares of a screaming kid who wants mac 'n cheese every night LOL

Anybody else??

  • We sound like we're in very similar situations.  I took a semi-BLW approach to introducing solids - never wanted to force anything or make eating a power struggle.  DD seems to love anything that will make her constipated, so we introduced the plum pouches to get prunes, peaches, etc., into her diet.  But any meal that has a bread or a meat in it, and she won't touch the pouch.  Luckily, she loves broccoli (we give her florets to hold).

I'm trying not to panic.  I don't know what we're going to do at a year when she's supposed to be eating solids for real... but we'll deal with that then.  For now, I'm accepting that she's exploring foods happily while I eat my lunch or dinner.

    Good luck!

  • Have you tried offering the veggies first, without anything else on the tray? Maybe try that, so she doesn't have the option of a meat or fruit right away? Then after she eats some you can add another choice or two to her tray.

  • I'd say it's not time to panic yet.  Eating is more about the different textures and tastes right now anyway.  I second PP's suggestion of offering the veggies first.  I know from my own DS, however, that once he sees something on my plate he wants, he's pretty stubborn about wanting it.

Just keep offering different veggies.  Chances are LO will take to one of them.  I went to a seminar about baby/toddler nutrition, and she said something I found helpful.  You can choose when and what your baby eats.  But it's up to them how much they eat.  So don't stress over that bit because a child will not willingly starve themselves.  They will eventually eat what's on their plate.

This is what I would do as well. Keep in mind that even the best fruit and veggie eaters will go through a stage where they don't want to eat anything you make though! I'm currently pureeing spinach for  peanut butter sandwiches:)

  • Thanks ladies!

I did try offering just veggies first but I think I give up too soon. I'll give her 2-3 tries and if she just spits it all out I just give her meat.... Sometimes I can trick her into getting something else in by giving her the piece of meat and then shoving something else in there. Sometimes she doesn't care sometimes she spits it out. I never force it where she's complainging tho of course.  I always try to keep it fun.

Maybe I'll give her a bit more time with the veggies. Maybe a bigger piece she can gnaw on for fun....

    Thanks again!

  • Our little girl loves her cheerios, yogurt melts, lil crunchies.

We started out with avocado and banana, which she was crazy about.  Now she hardly touches the stuff.  She also wouldn't eat cheese, until I was eating a slice last night and she actually reached up to try to get some.  I gave her a chunk and she happily ate the whole thing.

Just keep offereing and maybe try to eat vegetable in front of her.

Yup, I do that. We always eat together and I also tried not separating her food on her plate but leave it on mine so she gets exactly what I'm having. I guess I'll just have to keep offering.

Oh and DD also loves crunchy stuff. If she has her purees for breakfast she has to finish it off with either some cheerios, puffs or i just got her those little Gerber crunchies that are kind of like cheetos or cheese puffs. She loves that stuff. She has that from me, I love crunchy, salty snacks. :P
