Weaning at >2yo?

DS is 25 months and I really liked the idea of baby led weaning, but he never led me anywhere.  Now he's a full fledged toddler and still loves his milk like it's going out of style, which too bad for him: it is.

Does anyone have any happy stories or tips on how to convince a milkaholic toddler to give up the boob?

  • No. DD still nurses 3-4 times a day.  And today she has been begging for milk all day.

Do you have plans to wean her or are you going to nurse right through you pregnancy?

Is it just me or do some babies just want to nurse forever?

  • I don't have any tips. I'm still nursing DS1. I BF through my pregnancy and now I'm tandem nursing. I've limited him to 1x/day so that the whole tandem thing wouldn't completely overwhelm me. So far it has worked out well. I don't quite have a plan on when I'd like to wean him. I agree with you - I like the idea of child led weaning, but I'm starting to feel like I'll be ready to wean long before he is. And then I'm screwed because I don't even know where to start!
  • I give you girls credit! I hope to go to 18 months with this lo.

It wasn't really intentional, it just kind of happened.  He likes nursing and i like cuddles, then before i knew it he was 2!  Time goes so fast!  Who knows, maybe you'll find yourself saying the same thing... ;)

  • Long story short, you guys inspire me.

My DH asked me last night when LO was going to be done. I was like, when she  wants to be. He is okay with up to a year. He hasn't said absolutely no after that, but I can tell it makes him uncomfortable. I hope she keeps going. Maybe it's weird, but it is totally uncommon here to keep going past like a month, so I just want to keep going as long as she wants because that seems cool to me (plus all of the obvious reasons it is good for her).

The plan now is to continue. So far I'm not having any problems with it. I'm going to take it a day at a time. It's worked the last 2 years. Yesterday was just weird though. She never asks at random times anymore.

  • Still going strong at 24 months.  I thought for sure I would be done by now, but DS loves to "nana" (his word).  Starting next year, DH and I are going to be living two hours apart and DS will have to enroll in a new daycare (DS and I are the ones moving for my job).  I am hesitant to try to wean before we get settled into the new place since I can imagine that nursing will help with a lot of the transitioning.

In sum, I find nursing to be so damn useful and DS loves it so much, I can't see quitting now.  Although, I am starting to be embarrassed by it (mostly because of family).

  • Thanks for the tips, AmyG!

And thanks for your stories ladies.  It's nice to hear that others are still nursing, too. Everyone I know has either weaned or doesn't talk about it.
