Baby Names

Girl stumper

Ok - so I just found this board and thought I'd throw one out since you ladies have some GREAT suggestions.

We just found out we are having a girl and are lost on a name.  We wanted to include family, but my husband is from Ireland so we lean toward Celtic names to carry on some lineage as well.

Thoughts on these or other suggestions?

Fiona, Fallyn, Heather, Taylor

Re: Girl stumper

  • I think Fiona is one of the most gorgeous names in the world.

I STRONGLY dislike the name Heather, but I have a bad association.

Fallyn is nice, but it makes me think of phallic (which is probably not what you'd want)

I really don't like Taylor, but I'm not a fan of unisex names on girls.

  • I'm completely in the minority, but I'm not a fan of Fiona. I don't like Heather or Taylor either. Fallyn is very, very pretty.

I like Erin, Cassidy, Delaney, and Mckenna.

  • DH's mom is obsessed with the name Fiona and I think it is lovely.  We were thinking Fiona Grace or Fiona Jane.

I'm not sold on Heather, but DH has an association of the plant from home so that's tough.

Taylor is my mom's maiden name so we were trying to be nice, but all I think is Taylor Swift and it ruins it a bit and there seem to be hundreds of them - not so many Fionas.

I hear you on Fallyn.  I think of Dynasty and while it is unique it may be too much.  LOL

Thank you SO much for your opinion!  I'm really stuck.  Everyone associates Fiona with Shrek, but seriously I think it would be lovely for a little girl.  And if we go Fiona Jane we could call her FJ which I think is cute...ack decisions!

  • Ooh, Cassidy is cute.  I like that one!  Adding it to the list I think...
  • Bridget

My DD is named after a town/manor in Ireland (Adare/Adair)

  • Aww that's cute.  My DH liked Bridgid but his Mom shot it down big style.  He's from Carrickfergus and we actually toyed with Fergie (we even throught Fergus for a boy) but there's really no way to add it in.  The county is Antrim and that doesn't really turn into anything...  so tough.

Some names that could honor Carrickfergus might be Carys, Carissa, or Fern. Maybe middle names?

  • Is "Fallyn" pronounced "fallen" or "fallon" or "fay-lyn"? I'm not a fan of this one, as I have no idea how to pronounce it and it kinda looks made up; I don't like the "y".

I knew a girl named Taylor growing up and she was named that because it was her mother's maiden name. I was never a big fan of the name in general, even though there was no negative associations with her personally. I think having Taylor Swift might be a bonus in your case because it isn't as uncommon as it was back then, but if you don't like that association I wouldn't name her that.

I think Fiona is cute, despite the Shrek reference. But the only thing that I would worry about is how it ages. Like I said, the name is cute, but when you're thinking about a 30 year old's resume is it too cutesy? I'm not sure.

My name is Heather, and I've never had a problem with it (no bad nicknames or teasing, etc.). If it reminds your DH of home that's a nice association to have, and meaningful. It isn't as common anymore so if you wanted to avoid commonality that's good, but I don't think it will be a super strange or unheard of name either.

  • Fallyn 100% it was at the top of our list, spelled Fallon though

Heather and Taylor are dated and overused

  • If you like (or your DH likes) Heather, I would suggest Hadley.  It means "heather field" but it's a bit more modern.  I believe it has an English origin.

Other than that, Fiona is beautiful.

  • I like Fiona best of those 4, though I do think Heather would make a cute sentimental MN (and not very popular these days!)

Other Celtic girl names I like: Mairead, Keira, Maeve, Roisin, Saoirse, Tullia

  • Yeah, everyone has thrown in their two cents.  My mom wasn't a fan of Fiona (she'd have to "get used to it") but I really don't care.  :)

Thanks to all for the great suggestions and input ladies!  I like Hadley and I think Fiona is still a front runner.  Fallyn would be pronounced like Fallon but I don't want her struggling to spell it her whole life either.  LOL

Guess we'll have to see what wins that DH likes too.

  • My daughter's name is Celtic and her name is Shayla. Never once had a bad comment about it, everyone loves its uniqueness without being crazy.
  • Bryna, Keira

  • Love Fiona. The rest are nms. Especially Heather. I also like the name Ireland. Even though I'm sure I'm the only one.

Correct me if wrong, but Shayla is English, no? Is there a Celtic variant?

  • I kind of like Fallyn, which surprises me.  Fiona is ok.  My niece (Welsh) is named Fianna, which I like too.
