Supplementing with formula

Who has done this and how did it go? My fear would be that my DS would not want to nurse anymore.

Re: Supplementing with formula

  • I had to do it (and I hated it!).  DS wasn't gaining weight like they wanted him to.  I started offering 2 ounces of formula after we finished nursing every time and he gained almost 1 1/2 lbs in a week.  We did struggle a tiny bit with him not wanting to nurse but I was persistent and now we have no issues.  Now, he's only getting 2-3 bottles a day and nursing the rest.  I usually give him a bottle in the morning and at night before we go to bed.  Sometimes there's one in the middle of the day if I just can't seem to satisfy him with nursing.  We use Avent and Tommee Tippee bottles.

  • We just started doing this since LO moved up to 6 oz bottles. We just add a shot to the BM. I only pump 12-15 oz a day and she started eating 12-18.

She'd still rather have the real deal than the bottle. I think it depends on the age. Very young and they want the speed of the bottle. Older and they want to comfort of Mama.

  • It went well for us. We suplemented for awhile due to low weight gain. But basically I would offer a bottle (playtex drop ins not sure if that matters) after nursing and sometimes she would take it and sometimes not. Also, my husband gave her a bottle a few times when I was out. We didn't use any specific formula whatever we had gotten samples of. Eventually she just stopped taking the bottles, she is 9 months now and still nursing.
