how many calories are you eating?

so just curious? how many calories are you aiming for a day...i know your suppose to add 300 calories when you're pregnant but is that RIGHT away or later on?? with my last pregnancy I was overweight to begin with and didn't really care about what I ate :/ a few months before I found out I'm pregnant again I was doing really good with nutrition and working out, and sticking to 1800 calories a day. is that something I can continue doing? or do I have to bump it up a bit? thanks in advance :)

Re: how many calories are you eating?

  • I'm just getting past nausea, so I'm basically eating whenever I'm hungry, and trying to snack on healthy stuff when possible. I'm not hitting a "normal" level of calories per day these days, but working on getting it up to a more normal level. My day today was pretty typical of the past few:

    Raisin bran with 1% milk

    Cheese & crackers

    An apple

    Gingersnap cookies

    Celery with peanut butter

lots of water, plus OJ and seltzer.

I'm trying to get myself to eat some dinner, but I'm just not hungry, so I'm not going to force it. I've been drinking milk whenever I'm not hungry but need some extra protein, as it seems to be easier than eating solids. I've also made smoothies with milk, frozen fruit, and carnation instant breakfast powder, which is kind of sugary, but doesn't bother my stomach, and at least has some vitamins in it.

  • I need to be more cautious I am not eating tons but I am craving not healthy foods. A few days ago I had small burger at wendys which I rarely eat but I tasted so good I had another. I took kids to Chuck E Cheese I got salad bar but pizza smelled so good I had two pieces I dont even like pizza but will tolorate veggie pizza...this was pepperoni!

  • The average woman needs about 1500 calories a day. You can figure out your own individual calorie needs here:

    https://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

Add 300 to it. Though really, unless you are working with your doctor or nutritionist to be especially conscious of your weight gain then calorie counting should be last on your list.

Eat sensibly and you are good.

  • Am I supposed to be counting? Wink I kid slightly...slightly.

  • I would just continue to eat healthy - small meals throughout the day, your body will tell you if you need more.

Right now I'm lucky if I get 500 calories in

  • You don't need to eat extra calories this early. They start telling people to increase their calories in the second trimester and the third trimester is when people should be having 300 calories.

I'm sure that information is on The Bump somewhere.

  • I read that you should up your calories by 150 in first tri. I went from 1400 (to lose half a lb a week)to 1550, before exercise. I have not had any m/s, and I have essentially maintained my weight.

Yep, this is true. No extra calories in first tri. 150 in 2nd tri and 300 in 3rd tri. I am eating probably less than usual just because nothing sounds good. I'm forcing myself to eat so at least I'll have something.

I used this last time.. It's really helpful to visualize weight gain and where you should be to be on track. Not that it helped me not gain 65 pounds lol.

  • I just read this:

For the average woman, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, or ACOG, recommends about 1,800 calories a day during the first trimester. During this time, most women gain little weight and often do not appear pregnant. This recommendation increases to 2,200 calories per day during the second trimester, and approximately 2,400 calories during the third.

So the calories you add or don't add probably

depends on where you start. And your weight.

I don't know if this is helpful OP.

  • I had to add back in fiber and healthy carbs.

I was eating like 1300-1500 calories a day to lose weight. So I am eating about 1800-2000 or so now.

  • I'm not counting. I didn't count before, either. I eat when I'm hungry, and I try to make sure I'm getting a healthy, balanced diet. I don't think I'm eating a lot more - but no alcohol means I've cut quite a few calories, too, so maybe that's helped to balance it out.

  • I'm probably not getting 1800 calories a day.  My nausea keeps me from wanting to eat at some meals, so I'm probably eating less than I did before I was pregnant.  I'm just trying to eat when I can.
