December 2010 Moms

So I'm still a cow, but my baby is too small...

I must have a gift. Once again, my weight gain is too fast but my baby appears to be "too small." I'm currently measuring more than 4 weeks behind on fundal height and need a growth ultrasound. This happened with DD who measured 3 weeks behind. She was always below the 10th percentile and was just over 5lbs when born at 36 weeks and she's still itty bitty- not yet 22 lbs. She's perfectly healthy, so I'm not too worried about DD#2 but I sure wish my visit went more like "Well, Incogneato, you appear to have gained less weight than we advise, but your baby looks perfect!" Instead I get to gain a trillion pounds and still have a nugget baby which means all the other weight is mine to keep!

Also it doesn't help my healthy eating willpower when I tell myself to put down the cookie and the devil on my shoulder says, "But your baby is TOO SMALL! Eat the cookie for your baby!!!"

  • Aw, that would make me so upset.  I'm sorry.

  • Thanks ladies. Such a pain. I really do want to eat healthier for both our sake and I'd love to slow down this weight gain but now I have this little niggling worry that if I manage to slow down my weight gain, that LO will not get enough calories to grow. So that's not going to help me turn down the treats, even though a smart person would just eat more veggies and protein. Oh well. We'll see what happens at the U/S next week.
  • Yeah, I would make sure to keep eating plenty.  Just sucks that then you have to lose it.

  • Oh no, that is just so frustrating. I'm so sorry.  They told me A was too small too and he still is, but he is perfectly fine, just little and skinny. It stands to reason that your second would be the same situation as the first! I know that wouldn't stop you from worrying, but still...hugs.

  • Aww sorry hun I know how scary that is. DD was 4.9 at 37 weeks. Did they every say why they think she was so tiny?

    Nope. They looked really closely at my placenta but said it looked fine (after birth.) My guess is it's just genetic, which is good, but just in case.

    Here's hoping DD#2 is just another healthy little peanut!

  • Aw, that sucks! I'm sorry.

    I always measured behind with DS, and I was on the GD diet, so figuring out how to eat was very stressful and emotional for me, too. DS was a peanut, but my fundal height was measuring even smaller than he did on the u/s, so I think part of it was just how I carried him or something? He's still a little guy, but healthy so all's well that ends well.

    Since your DD is little but healthy, I think chances are good your new baby will be the same. It's nice that they're giving you the extra ultrasound just to keep tabs on things, but I bet you'll be fine.

    ::hugs::

  • Sad That is so frustrating.  I'm sorry.  No advice, just my sympathy as someone else who gained a ton of weight that very little of went to LO.
