how long does your LO take to feed?

I thought it was normal to take about an hour to breastfeed, but an LC told me it should only take about 30 minutes. My DS is 7 weeks actual, 1 week adjusted and he takes anywhere from 20-40 minutes for 2-3 ounces from a bottle and 40 to an hour for breastfeeding. Also, my DS still falls asleep quite a bit during feedings, so that entire time is not spent feeding. I thought that was normal, but the LC commented that he is a leisurely eater. Does this sound like what you have experienced / are experiencing with you LOs?

Re: how long does your LO take to feed?

  • My twins are 8w2d (2w6d adj) and they take 20-40 mins to bottle feed (2-3oz) usually and falling asleep part way (then I do a change to wake them) as well. Breastfeeding I'm not sure bc I really haven't had a chance to try too often but the one time I did, I BF 20 mins then had to top up with pumped milk before the other woke up for her turn. Z has needed high cal breast milk so I can't really BF till she's off (which we are now weaning her off :D). E has an awesome latch but I don't have the time to give her :( soon enough though I will tandum feed and they will both have a ton of time.

  • My LOs BFing times are all over the place.  If she is really hungry or I am really full (like first thing in the AM) she is usually done in 20-30 minutes.  But sometimes later in the day she will take up to an hour.  Sometimes she falls asleep (I usually switch sides when she falls asleep on me) and sometimes she doesn't lol  I don't really know what "normal" is but LO is happy and I am fine with it so we just keep on keepin on :)

  • My twins are 4w6d actual and 38w6d GA and were doing the same thing until a few days ago. I was coaxing them to finish faster/wake up by manipulating the bottle in their mouth or rubbing their head and back while they nursed. Now they finish a bottle in 15-20 ad nursing in 15. Not sure if my "hey, hurry up" cues helped or if they just grew out of it.

  • My boy is 3 weeks and 2 days actual. 39 weeks and 4 days gestational. He is just now starting to get better with his feeding times. It used to take an hour and now we are down to 30-45 minutes. I strictly FF so I don't know how different it would be if i were nursing. Though when I tried to nurse he would fall asleep A LOT. Nowadays, he still falls asleep but he also gets really gassy so we do a lot of burping during feedings. And he is really sleepy we might change him so he can finish the last ounce.
