How Much Can You Pump

I am really struggling to keep up with my LO. I had to use 2oz of my stash today to keep up and I'm sure I'll need 10oz of it tomorrow.

I am going to get a new breast shield size after work. I've already tried every size except extra large, so I will give that a shot as a last ditch effort.

So I'm looking for some sort of baseline to know how much I could be getting. I need to pump 15oz. a day to keep up...is that unreasonable? I pump 3 times for 25 minutes each. How much do you pump a day?

Re: How Much Can You Pump

  • If your Lo sleeps a longer stretch at night, can you pump then?

I know that doesn't sound awesome, but it might keep you ahead.

  • I pump once a day and get anywhere between 3-6oz.

  • I ep, so I pump about 50 oz a day. I pump ever 4 hours, about 8 to 12 oz a season. I have a slight over supply.
To add, pumping first thing in the morning and trying to get a session before bed will really help build your supply

  • I typically pump 3 times a day for about 20 min and get 15 oz total. every now and then I get a little more. This weekend I got the flu so my supply has been low the last couple days, which sucks because my freezer stash was already low because we used some of it while we were traveling for thanks giving. Now my freezer stash is gone and i don't know if i'll have enough for daycare tomorrow :(

Good luck I hope the new shields help, also have you tried switching the membranes?

  • I pump about 9oz every session and I pump 5 times a day, so 40oz a day. I pump an extra session on my days off to stash some.

Have you changed the membranes the little white disks? I use a 27mm shield, but when I used 24mm I didn't get half as much, so that might be your problem. How long are you pumping? 1520 minutes is good. Are you massaging while you pump? Have you tried dangle pumping....just like dangle feeding; get on all fours/just lean over while you pump? I eat two bowls of oatmeal a day, take prenatals, and try to drink a lot of water. The more you pump, the more you'll produce...supply and demand! Oh and do a lot of skin to skin. I swear the only reason I produce as much as I do is because my son wants to be held constantly, so he's always right against my boobs.

  • I pump 3-4 times a day at work and my volume goes down as the day goes on.  At my 8 am pump I get 6-8oz (sometimes 10 depending on when LO ate).  After that I will usually get 5-6 at my next, and for the next one or two 3-5oz each time.  I double pump with a PISA for 10-15 min a session.

  • I pump 3 to 5 times per day and get 8-10 ounces each time.

  • I've been pumping at work 3 times a day for 10-15 minutes each time for 2 months now and have gotten a total of 14-16 oz/day.  Today, out of no where, 5 oz total.  I am SO UPSET!  I was home for 5 days with a sick LO (who never stopped nursing) and I come back to 5 oz all day?!  :(  I send in 12 oz to daycare.  I'm so glad I have an ok stash in the freezer (80 oz) but its gonna be gone if I can't replace what I've sent in.

  • Currently, I also pump the left side when she takes the right at 6:30 in the morning and at 10pm when she's sleeping. I also drink 3 cups of mothers milk tea, a big bowl of oatmeal and 32oz of pineapple juice a day. I really don't feel like its a supply issue because nursing has gone great.

I have changed one of the membranes, because I lost on at my moms, but didn't see a change. Haven't heard of dangle feeding, that's intriguing.

Clearly I should be getting more though.

This. Or if you pump after a MOTN feeding, you still might have something. Your body makes the kist milk at night.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I pump 40 to 45 oz a day, pumping every 4 hours for 30 minutes at a time. My LO eats about 35 oz a day give or take, so I freeze the rest.

I should also mention that I am an exclusive pumper. DS will not latch onto my breast at all.

  • I pump once in the morning and get 12-15 oz.  Keep a regular schedule when you nurse/ pump.  Even on the weekends.  This will help to keep a constent supply.  Have you tried fenugreek?  It always seemed to help increase my supply.

  • I EP. 3x a day. I don't really time it, just go until I'm empty. Usually 20 to 25 minutes. I get anywhere from 10 to 17 oz per session. That's both boobs combined.

  • Very, very little. I pump up to 5x a day, take mothers milk pills, domperidone, and drink like a fish while eating oatmeal and get about 1-2 oz per session. Baby girl enjoys breastmilk and I like to breast feed so I keep at it...but it is definitely not the most efficient use of my time.

Wow!! 40oz! Are you ever lucky. I get about 2 oz when I pump but I BF, so maybe that's why? I've read average is 13oz per session. I'm not sure if that's in combination with BFing or EPing. Edit: this should have been a reply to anbeck also it should read 1 to 3 oz per session not 13.

this! I pump once in the morning after his first daylight feed, usually 30 mins to an hour after and only get about 1-1.5 oz combined from both boobs. If I pump to replace a feeding I get about 2.5 oz.  I do weighed feeds every week though at a breastfeeding group and know he gets more than that, he usually takes aout 3-4 oz from me during those feeds unless he's tanked up not long before that feed like today where he only took a little over 2 oz.

  • I'm doing my last pump of the day now at it looks like I will get 5 oz. today. So almost an hour and a half and 5 oz...boo. That's only one bottle for my LO. Everyone keep your fingers crossed that larger shield works for me!

  • I've been trying to boost my pumping supply also.  Currently I pump 3 times per day but I usually only get 3 ounces per session.  I've been dipping into my small stash from maternity leave.  I'm at the point that I can't keep up with her demands.  I eat oatmeal daily and have tried different sized shields.  I just ordered new membranes this week.  I'm hoping it helps!

  • I try to pump at least three times at work and usually am able to bring at least 12 ounces home and I try to keep 20 in the fridge for her.   She ate so much yesterday the sitter had to break out the freezer stash . . . I feel your pain pumping is hard work and stressful.

Keep us posted on the larger shield and how it works out for you!  I'm interested to know.  I wonder if it would make a difference in my output.

I'm wondering myself. I just ordered a new AC adapter and new tubing too. So I'm hoping that might make a difference. If not I want to go ahead and move up the size in the flanges. I don't have huge nips but you never know if it'll make a difference..

  • I always thought I never made enough and I never had the pump on the right setting. If I crank the setting to high, so more pressure u an pump 5oz in ten minutes. I EBF but I have an over supply. I'm sure 15oz isn't unreasonable. Depending how many times u pump and if ur pumping or feeding in between.

  • I pump twice a day and get 6 to 8oz TOTAL. Baby girl usually eats 16oz while I'm gone so we make up the difference with formula. I don't see any way I would ever be able to close a gap that huge. I'm trying to be content with getting what I get.

  • I'm pumping at 9:30am, 12:30pm, and 3:30pm while I'm at work and I'm taking home ~12-15 ounces.  I may start adding in an early morning session or a night time one depending on his needs.

I used to have an oversupply but I worked really hard to "fix" it... Now I wish I hadn't messed with it!  My pumping output also took a hit when I got the Mirena IUD placed- boooo.

I have to say though, I love this post.  I was worried that I wasn't pumping nearly enough but it seems like I'm pretty average- that makes me feel a lot better!

  • I pump 4 times per day, I pump 2528 oz per day. I was able to pump 3540 oz per day when I had my hospital rental pump.

  • I'm pumping 4x per day & getting about 25 oz, I think. Today I slipped probably about 3 oz from my first pump. That sucked.

I have a good sized freezer stash right now - 270 oz. I pumped 1x per day while I was off and froze about 4oz every day.

  • I am an EPer- I pump 5-6 times each day for 10-20 minutes (depending on what my work schedule is like) and get anywhere from 4.5 to 8 oz per session. In a day I get about 32oz, which is 5 oz more than what LO needs.
