Breastfeeding

Re-Lactation??

Has anyone here heard of or tried re-lactation? We tried breastfeeding the twins in the hospital when they were born but I wasn't making any milk, so i stopped and started formula feeding. The day we all laft the hospital (day 5) my milk came in. I never continued to nurse.

Now they are both on nutramigen for reflux and the cost is huge!!! I would love to regain a supply and supplement the formula with breast milk.

Re: Re-Lactation??

  • My sister did it but her LO was older?  I have read several success stories on here though.  I think there is a section on kellymom.com about it.

You might be able to get insurance to cover the nutramigen, or part of it.  I remember a coworker telling me this.  Since reflux is a medical condition, maybe?  I would ask!  Couldn't hurt.

  • Thank you. I called and asked about the Nutramigen, they said it is not covered. I also asked if the twins were put on a Rx Formula, would that be covered, they said no to that as well. :/

  • There is information at kellymom and the LLL website.  I would see an LC if you can, but you need to start ASAP.  The earlier the higher your chances of success.  I would definately get a good pump, but you need to put LO's to the breast as well.

  • I believe if you ask your OB or ped dr to prescribe a hospital grade pump, that would help. With my first I went off and on with nursing/re-lactating for the first 3 months because I had such a hard time nursing (I have flat nipples but didn't dry up completely, so not sure after 2 months).  I was desperate and started EP with a hospital grade.  My supply was not as great and I did have to supplement with some formula, but pumping helped.  My second also had latch problems, so I bought a pump and they are not as effective as the hospital grade.  For this last baby I'm prepared if baby doesn't latch, the arsenal of fenugreek, oatmeal, SNS feeder, hospital grade pump, etc. will be used.  I know its a lot of work, but  worth a try IMO.  Kellymom has been my go to source to figure out how to handle any issues.  GL!
