Weaning from the pump

Hi. My daughter is 5 months old and I've started weaning from the pump. I'm down to pumping 3 times a day and I still get between 25 and 30 oz. Same as when I was pumping 5 times a day. Is this normal for my supply not to decrease? I'm also pumping for 8-10 min instead of 15 min before. I'm trying to stop all together. Right now my breasts get so full I can't imagine cutting out my middle of the day pump....any advice on how to stop? TIA!

Re: Weaning from the pump

  • Yep, totally normal! I don't see any supply decrease until I go OVER 12 hours between pumps.

  • Try pumping only for 5 min on your middle of the day pump for a few days, or even less if you can to drop down to 2 pumps.  Once you've adjusted, do the same with the morning and evening pump and hopefully that should help.

Just out of curiosity, having such a good supply how come you're trying to wean?  Is it just from pumping or do you nurse as well?

  • She's in daycare all day so she gets bottles all day long..the only time I nurse is in the middle of the night when she wakes up. Truthfully I'm so sick of pumping.  I hate being tied to the pump on the weekends and waking up early and staying up later at night just to pump.

  • My LC said it takes about three-five days for your body to adjust to the missed pumping session.
