I want to get a table runner for the dining room, I am on etsy & see that a lot of them are burlap, just wondering how that would hold up. I like the look for a rustic holiday look.
Mine is, but I put nothing on it really other than like centerpiece items. Too hard to clean table runners, I've never had much luck with any kind looking as nice and pressed as they did before they needed to be cleaned. Were you curious of hold u up in terms of food getting on it and how it would look post-clean?
I'm guessing with multiple kids, food could get any 'ole place despite efforts.
I'd imagine it'd last at least through the holidays. My friend made burlap curtains for her son's nursery so I'd imagine burlap is decently sturdy. If I were you...I'd go buy some burlap and make your own runner. It'd be a lot cheaper than Etsy. Love Etsy and the idea behind it but some of those people are awful proud of their stuff and way overprice it.

I don't know if I am as worried about it getting dirty, as I am about how it will hold up when I am taking it on & off the table to wipe the table down. They aren't too bad on etsy, that I can see, but I haven't priced burlap lately, either. Brooke did something to her sewing machine & I can't figure it out, so I am debating if it's worth the few extra to have someone else make it. I dont know. *sigh* I'm too tired to think right now. ha-ha
I made one that's now been retired (husband hated it...) The only thing I noticed in terms of it holding up was that a) of course the sides have to be stitched down in some way or it will ravel to pieces and b) it shrinks a little in the wash, so ideally should be pre-shrunk.

Last time I bought burlap I think I paid 3/yd. I cant remember if that was with or without a hob lob coupon though!

Oh, then the prices on etsy really aren't too bad then. The one I am looking at is $17, it's 7ft & is stiched & stamped with "Be Merry"
I had one last year for Christmas. Disaster. Cats thought it was a toy and shredded one end, then I got schmutz on it and threw it in the washer, which caused it to unravel. If you're going to go with burlap, don't copy my stupidity. Put it down, leave it, enjoy it.
I haven't read the other responses, but I am all about using different materials as runners. Have you checked into canvasy paint dropcloths from HD? I love those things.
That's a good idea! Ooooh, you know what would be cute, to let the kids do one for Thanksgiving next year. Little handprints along the edges, or something? Is that stupid?
