Hey ladies,
I saw a similar post below, and it inspired me to ask for your opinion about my situation.
When we found out we were pregnant, my MIL-to-be offered us the bassinet my fiance slept in as a baby. I thought this was a beautiful gesture, and accepted.
Now, I'm having second thoughts. It's a "moses basket"-style bassinet, meaning it's a wicker basket with handles, and it sits directly on the floor. She want to add a new mattress and bumpers around the edges. I know that bumpers aren't recommended in cribs.
I don't know. I like the idea of being able to keep the baby next to the bed at night, but I'm just not convinced it's completely safe.
Any second or third-time moms out there who've used bassinets like this? Any other thoughts?
Here's an example of what I'm talking about:
Re: Are moses baskets safe??
BFP #1 9/7/10, EDD 5/14/11, Violet born 5/27/11.
BFP #2 4/9/12, EDD 12/16/12, M/C Rory 4/24/12.
BFP #3 10/6/12, EDD 6/16/12., Matilda born 6/17/13.
You could also just accept it and use it in the living room.
This
We have one that we use in our living area. They are great for a sleeping newborn and I prefer it over a swing or a bouncy seat. I use it if I need my hands free, cooking, doing the dishes, etc. For sleeping next to our bed though, I prefer the Arms Reach CoSleeper.
We also have a stand that the basket fits into so it's not on the floor. We have this one:

My only concern is the age ... Wicker becomes brittle with age, so leave it on the floor and don't lift it by thehandles with the baby In it.
also, don't put tar and pitch on the bottom and float it down. The river ... Jk
,
Ha! Ok, I promise I won't float it down the river.
Thanks for your advice everyone! I think I'll just use it in the living room, like so many of you have suggested.
I used one just for naps in the living room. I had originally gotten it for overnight sleep, but decided to get an Arms Reach Co-Sleeper instead... you can use it for longer, it puts baby right next to you safely, and has mesh sides vs. these fabric sides.
The moses basket was also good for trips to people's houses and short visits... that way, when I'd go to someone's house in case LO needed a nap, I could just plop that down on their floor and have an instant nap space. I have a rocking stand from Restoration Hardware Baby & Child that I use with it.
