Baby Names

Took WuFroggy's advice and went to the Baby Names board. How come I never visited before?! It's a total train wreck. What happened to the good old solid names?!

Re: Baby Names

  • It's even spread to here. I know of a Treyton with the middle name Cason and a last name Somethingarion. Oooh rhymie! I've also met a Keverlee. Neveahs are speading like wildfire too. Usually my area is 10 years behind lol.

  • I live in a small town.

I was at a kiddie function this summer when I overheard a mom calling "Razor!  Razor!".  Of course, I was looking around for a dog to come bounding up.

Nope.  It was her kid.  Her 3 year old named Razor.

    That should end well.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Someone on my birthboard (I think) said she's met a Salad. You don't win friends with Salad.

I saw someone post it with my own eyes. I also used the same Simpsons quote.

I was thinking either Optimus or Neveah for baby #2 here.

Optimus is a traditional name of my people.

My people being boys who grew up in the 80s.

Seriously, as long as the hiring manager is a dude my age or younger, he'd get hired for every job he applied to. He'd at least get an interview!

My kids middle name is Vader. I think it's going to take him places in life.

I shared the 'Salad' name with DH. He asked if the name was motivated as a result of the mom being constipated her entire pregnancy.

We ask our selves that every day over there. I don't understand how people come up with some of these so called "names." Hospital postings are often worse, unfortunately.

I face palm and cringe multiple times a days.

The board tends to have a preference for naming style, though. Most of the regulars don't tolerate misspellings / you-neek names, boy names on girls, made up names, etc. They don't go over well at all.

Recently I have seen a Rigley (girl), Jaxsyn (boy), and saw ArCzaira Jaquryi-lyn on a hospital website. WTF?

It definitely is a train-wreck board, although the regs say what I would say in a nicer way. I am more sympathetic to boy-names-on-girls, although I'm concerned that this tends to erode the number of boy names available. Remember, Ashleigh, Leslie, and a number of other names were men's names only two or three generations ago.

My Monday Confession is I don't hate Rigley. I like Ridley better though.

Ugh, not even that long ago. I went to school with boys named Ashley, Leslie, Avery and Courtney, so it's still weird for me to hear them on girls. But miles better than Moo. Or Ayce. Or Daxtyn.
  • BNB would have a freaking field day with my friends/family. Apparently I may be the only person who takes naming a kid seriously. Which is weird and sad since I like more "unusual" names, though traditional.

For instance a sampling of friends/family naming styles: Xyza (g), Aruna (g), Teagan (b), Brantley (b), Deegan (b), Ayden (g), and Jaiden (b).

    This is a small sampling.

My kids: Rosalie and Cade. I have so much fun on FB.

When I get my little princess she will be Lmnop, pronounced Elemenopy. No stealzies!! mmkaythanx

What is worse is that her middle name is Yuki and her last name starts with a Z. So not only does her name have XYZ, but those are her initials too.

Oh, and there is a girl with a little girl named Riot on my FB as well. ::facepalm::

That poor girl is doomed to be the last called in her class for everything.

Yeah... it's pretty sad TBH. I have a feeling they will regret naming her this by the time they are in their 30's.

  • I guess I'm a regular over there - I feel like a creeper sometimes since my one kid is named but I like hanging out there and spouting off my bits of wisdom. I'm a word nerd.

Adair had her named signed off by the author of Freakonomics and I wear it as a badge of honor.

Easy. When you have a good old solid name, you don't need the reassurance of internet strangers telling you it's be-yoo-tiful.

Courtney? According to my quick google-fu, that one was claimed as a girl name in the late 1950s. Avery to me has been an Old Man name for a while, but apparently has been recently taken over as a girl name. Pretty much any name that ends in a terminal "ee" sound is considered feminine now.

My son is named after my great grandpa, but Finley is becoming a pretty popular girl's name now. Oh well.

My dad is a Kelly too.
