August 2012 Moms

I think I may need a new doc.

So as you ladies suggested I called my ob about my possible ppa. They asked if I felt like I was going to hurt myself or my baby and I told them no. So the next question was ok then would you like us to call you in some anxiety meds? Shouldn't I be seen or something? I thought those kinds of meds were controlled. And is it even safe to take them while breastfeeding? I told them I would like to be seen and they said if I want to be seen they would have to call the doc to see if she wants to see me before making me an appt. What if they dont want to see me who should I call?

Re: I think I may need a new doc.

  • I was on anxiety meds after my girls were born.  I started taking them after talking to the midwife at my 6 week checkup.  She didn't do anything special, so I am guessing that if I would have called about them, they would have just called in an Rx without me needing to go in to be seen.  Oh, and I breastfed on them, it was fine.

  • Thanks ladies this helps. I was worried because the last time I called in for something they gave me something that said "do not take if breastfeeding" right on the bottle. I don't want him to get anything that will hurt him via breastmilk and I do not want to stop nursing because of this. I am going to call the free therapy clinic we have at work to see when I can get an appt. later this afternoon when DS takes his nap.

  • I take celexa, which I took before I TTGP. It has a low transfer through BM and is fairly safe for an anxiety med. Zoloft made me crazy (hallucinations, violent tendencies, etc). Maybe try to get in touch with a psychiatrist instead.

  • I'd feel uneasy about that too. My thinking is: wouldn't they at least want to discuss what it going on with you in detail to see if they can help in other ways before medicating you? I mean, what if I just really needed someone to talk to and after talking it out realized therapy was a better route than medication? So many doctors jump to medicate...I work in a hospital and see it happen constantly. If you have to ask if you should get a new OB, then you should. You should never feel uncomfortable. You would make an appointment with a new OB and talk to them about your possible PPA. GL!
