Do you like your stroller or car seat? I've heard really awful stories about damage to both whether gate-checked or checked at the desk. If it's a cheapy umbrella stroller, or a carseat your babe is about to grow out of, I wouldn't worry about it. When we traveled, we brought his primary car seat and BabyJogger stroller, and I would have been pissed if anything happened to them. So we got bags for both. We checked the stroller with our luggage and the carseat at the gate.
As bonuses:
1: Both had extra room in them we could use as luggage to store things like diapers, sweaters, shoes, toys, etc.
2: The car seat bag had shoulder straps like a backpack, which made carrying it through the airport REALLY easy.
3: This didn't work for us, but having the car seat at the gate meant that if there is an open seat (there wasn't) we could have brought it on the plane and had LBB sit in it.
I gave them the car seat loose when we checked our bags and the airline put it in their own bag, we always check in outside the airport so maybe that's why? I've only brought a car seat once. I always gate check our stroller and have never had an issue. I like bringing the stroller through security because I can put all our carry on stuff on it and no whining about being tired of walking.
We checked our car seat with our luggage, the airline put it in a bag before checking it. We brought our stroller right up to the plane and they checked it at the door. We had no damage to either! I originally wasn't going to bring the stroller but my mom convinced me, I would always suggest bringing the stroller right up to the gate now! It made it so much easier!
Re: Taking stroller, car seat on plane
I checked my stroller at the gate and they took the car seat with my other checked bags. They just loop a tag on it somewhere. (booster seat)
When Oliver was a baby we bought him his own seat and the carseat came on the plane and got buckled in.
