first and only synagis shot

My LO gets his first and only synagis shot. He was supposed to get it at the beginning of November but he ended up getting RSV so they waited until he was over that. Luckily his RSV wasn't bad, mostly just really bad cold symptoms. He still has cold symptoms now and we've already rescheduled his Synagis twice because of it so they said just bring him in to get it today anyways.

I was googling getting synagis and another message board popped up and they were saying you have to wait in the office for 20 minutes after the shot to see if they have a reaction? Did you have to do that? That makes me feel nervous for him to possibly have a reaction.

Any other advice or anything i should expect or look out for after his synagis today??

Re: first and only synagis shot

  • We had to wait there for 15 minutes to make sure neither baby had any kind of reaction.  It's just a precaution.  They just told us to watch for a fever at home... same as after any other vaccine.

  • we didn't have to wait, although we ended up staying because I nursed him quickly and there were no reactions. He wasn't even cranky afterward but he did cry for the shots. :-(

  • We didn't have to wait but it did take me a good 15 minutes to redress the kids and put them in their car seats to leave. They cried hard for a few minutes afterward too but otherwise were fine. GL

  • Yes, we waited around for 20 minute to make sure that DD didn't have any reactions to the shot. I hope everything goes well today.

  • We have ours administered by a home health nurse, and she stayed around for about 20 minutes for the first shot.  They do it as a precaution.  She said that in the 10 or so years they've been administering the synagis shots, they've never had a baby have a reaction, but they are still extra cautious.

As for what to expect, it's just like any other vaccination, without the side effects of a possible fever and crankiness, which is nice.

You'll do great!  Just keep reminding yourself that it's to keep your LO safe - even if it's scary!

  • Our pedi didn't have us wait and didn't mention anything about a reaction. Luckily, DS didn't have any problems with it.
