Question for MSPI mommas

So a month and a half ago my son was diagnosed with a milk protein intolerance. His only real symptoms of it was mucousy stools with blood in them. I have been dairy free for a month and a half now, thanksgiving was not fun at all, and he still has mucous in his stool but I'm not sure if there is still any trace of blood. Is it possible he is intolerant to soy as well since his stools are about the same? I hate to say it but if he is we are absolutely switching to formula. I have been extremely careful with cutting dairy out but most of what I eat still contains soy.

He is also getting back into the wanting to nurse every hour and a half all day and night routine again. My breasts are so sore from the past 3 days of nursing. Is that normal for his age? He is almost three months.

Re: Question for MSPI mommas

  • There's a growth spurt at 3 months, so that might be why he's been nursing so frequently.

Something like 40 percent of dairy intolerant babies are also soy intolerant. I am dairy and soy [and nut] free. This time of year is extra challenging, but I keep reminding myself that this diet is temporary. In the grand scheme of things, the period of time I'm on this diet is very short.

I started out finding staples I knew were safe, and over time I've learned some great new recipes. It hasn't been easy, but it's been so worth it to see DD2 thriving. There have been times I've wanted to switch to formula, just out of frustration, but I'm too darn stubborn. But I definitely understand why some moms decide to go that route.

I would ask the pedi to test one of LO's diapers to see if there is still blood present [sometimes it's present on a microscopic level]. Then I would reevaluate and see how you want to proceed.

  • So you've been careful about hidden dairy too? Vitamins, medications? I was several months into the diet before I realized there was lactose in the ibuprofen I occasionally took. :/
Soy definitely cuts out most processed foods, but I've been able to replace most of my old usual products with new ones. Aside from that, we just cook most of our food from scratch at home and have found a few places to eat out. It's hard, but definitely doable.
Good luck! That 3 month growth spurt is rough, but it should pass soon.
  • After I cut dairy and soy my girl still had mucous quite often.  I can not afford $100+ per week for elemental formula so we just went with it.  Since there was no blood and she seemed happy I figure it's as good as it's going to get.  Now it's rare to see mucous, so I think it just took another month or two for things to really get better in her gut.

The diet was tough at first but now it's really not that big of a deal (most of the time).  When you read labels a lot of things have soybean oil or soy lecithin, both are fats, not proteins, and both of which are safe for most MSPI people (still causes problems for a very small percentage though).
