Baby Showers

Worst shower game ever!

I am helping with my sister's baby shower and the hostess asked me to find a couple of games. I just found this game on amazon which I have to say is the worst idea ever. Way to make the mama to be feel like a huge fat @$$! I can't help but crack up at the thought of what would inevitably happen. "Oh wow, you're a lot bigger than I thought." "Oh, you just look much BIGGER than you are I guess!" Nice. And if any men are around, one of them will really exaggerate and do an extra extra long tape. My sis would kill me!

This game seems to get played at every baby shower I go to because it's quick and easy.  But it's usually just with string.  No MTB has ever complained that I've heard of.

ditto...this was played at my shower as a tie-breaker to another game. I didn't think anything of it.

  • Indifferent If anyone suggested playing this game at one of my showers, I would probably refuse. How embarrassing for the MTB. I have never been to a shower where this game was played.

ETA this is just my opinion, but I wouldn't want to have people guess my size. Maybe that's just me but I would find it embarrasing.

  • I think it might depend on if a person has body issues to start with. It would have made me very uncomfortable.

The co-hostesses at a friend's shower wanted to play this and I knew the MOTB would hate it--later when she and I were talking about my likes/dislikes for my own shower, I found out I was right, that it would have made her very uncomfortable.

  • I've seen this played at 2 showers and it makes me cringe (once with TP, once with crepe paper).  I already let my sisters know that I'm a good sport about playing most games save for this one and the one where people melt chocolate bars in diapers and make you guess what they are.  I draw the line on those.
  • It was played at a friends shower a few weeks ago, no sizes, everyone just cut balloon ribbon to the size they thought the MTB was...it was cute, she didn't mind. It's not like anyone had a measuring tape out or was throwing out size numbers.

  • We actually played this at my shower. It was a joint shower with DH's cousin, who's due a month after me. I'm only 5'2, so there's not much room for baby to go - I have a huge belly. She's a good 8in taller than me, and she just had this cute little bump (and was able to wear her pre-pregnancy jeans). So when the hostess announced this game and had us stand up in the middle of the circle of guests I was definitely terrified and embarrassed. But it actually wasn't horrible - I made a lot of jokes about it, people laughed and were nice. My 8 year old niece guessed the size exactly! I got a starbucks gift card out of the deal, so it turned out okay :)
  • At least it doesn't involve candy bars in diapers...

  • I don't think it's really the worst. It's been played at every single shower I've been to in the past 4 years, I swear. Some people are just too uptight. It's just a game.

    100% this!!

My mom asked me what kind of games I liked and I suggested the string game - I thought it was funny.  Some guests cut the string too short on purpose, to not insult me, I guess.  It was all in good fun.

I tend to agree. Like others have said, the candy bar in the diaper is gag-worthy. If the hostesses decided to play this at my shower, it wouldn't bother me. I'm secure enough to know the difference between "oh, you're so fat" and " wow, you have a big baby"! But to each their own I guess.

  • Meh I guess it just depends on the people. It was a game that was played at mine and it didn't bother me.

But I am with you...if you think there are any chances that she would be hurt then probably not the greatest game to play

  • Being preggo is not about being embarrassed about your size. Creating a healthy baby was my main goal. I don't think any MTB would/should worry about her big belly. I was proud of mine :)

Just because someone is concerned about the size of her belly doesn't mean her main goal isn't a healthy baby. The whole point is that you likely don't know what's going on with the person. What if they have major self esteem issues you don't know about? What if they are secretly battling an eating disorder for the health of their baby? Yes, extreme example.... but I wouldn't do this at any shower unless specifically requested by MTB

  • I didn't mind playing this at my shower. I can see where if a woman already had body issues this might bother her.

Agree that the diaper candy game is the worst and i would also nominate the "taste the baby food" game as another terrible one

  • Years ago this game was played all the time.  Like one pp said...it was quick and easy and no one complained.  They played it at one of my showers and quite frankly it was no big deal.  They used yarn and there were no "real" measurements taken.

  • I've been to showers where this game was played and seen various reactions from the MTB - some don't mind; others you can tell are uncomfortable with it.  We did not play any games at my shower (thankfully!) but depending on my mood on the day of the shower and how I was feeling about myself, I can see how it could have upset me.  I never felt like I was overly big when I was pregnant but towards the end of my pregnancy, I had a major meltdown over both my parents and my MIL saying how "huge" I was.  I'm sure it was hormones, but out of nowhere it really, really upset me.  So, it's kind of a risky game but it's certainly not the worst one I've played at a shower.

  • I'd never heard of this game before but I guess it is fun for some so I take it back - it isn't the worst game ever but a snickers in a diaper DEFINITELY is! Vom!

  • This game was played at my shower and it never bothered me...however I did feel bad when the winner, a work friend of mine, said "oh wow, I just wrapped it around my own stomach" (she wasn't pregnant).

  • We did this at my shower and I thought it was funny...But if the mother to be is not the type of person who can laugh at themselves, or if she has been really self conscience about her weight then it would be in bad taste.

  • I actually think this game is fun and I usually win.Smile We just take a piece of string and guess how much the belly sticks out. I have never heard of anyone having an issue with this and it ends up being the game that gets everyone the most amped up.
