Breastfeeding

9 months, hurting, and feeling like giving up

My goal was to breastfeed until 1 year old, but lately I've been encountering so much pain I feel like stopping. Hoping someone here can give some advice.

About once a month for the past 3 months I get a blister on the left nipple. Maybe it's because LO has 6 teeth? Not sure why/how it happens, but it only happens on the left. The blister develops over about 2-3 days and is painful when LO latches on - a searing pain that makes me bit my tongue to keep from crying out! It lasts for about 30-45 seconds. The nursing session then continues as normal. At some point the blister pops and is continues causing pain for another 4-5 days. I'll also feel pain throughout the day if I bump the breast or something.

Because this keeps happening, it's making me want to quit...I feel sad because I want to reach my goal, but this pain is terrible and the thought of this continuing is not motivating. Help.

  • I was just about to post a question. On this!

I had what I thought was a milk blister. I soaked the nipple and gently unroofed the blister. And now it's excruciating to nurse. When the blister was there, it was fine. Basically.

So in order to prevent these, what do you do? And what should i do to lessen this pain? I work tomorrow, so ill be pumping in the day. Which should help. Thanks.

ETA I am now a silver poster. Crazy. And I did not mean to hijack your thread. I just have the same issue!

Sounds similar, but mine hurts even when the blister is still present. So, not sure it's the same. I really don't know...

  • My lo is 8 weeks old and I just got one of these on my right side! I was going to ask about it as well. The pain was awful until I popped it and now it's still bad but bearable.

I shouldn't say fine. Or else I wouldn't have noticed it! But it was bearable. Now ds1 keeps asking why I'm biting my hand.

  • I have been having this same issue lately as well. My ds is also 9 months. The pain is excruciating!!

I have found that an Epsom salt soak followed by lanolin helps it heal faster.

I think my ds soesn't always get a good latch in the night. I had one on the right and it took forever to heal and now I have one on the left! Not. Fun.
