Groceries to have on hand? (FTM)

What suggestions do you ladies have about foods/drinks to have on hand when we get home from the hospital (and for the first few weeks while we're learning to BF)?

Depending on when LO arrives, I'll be by myself during the day from about 7-4:30 (DH is a teacher and his Christmas break doesn't start until Dec 21st, which is 10 days after my due date).  I want to make sure I have things stocked up that I'll be able to prepare easily when I'm by myself, but are also healthy for me and baby.  DH is a good cook, so I'm not worried about dinners.

Also, anything in particular that's recommended with BFing?  I've read about eating oatmeal so I'll make sure we have that.  Anything that ISN'T recommended that can negatively affect your supply?  TIA!!

  • I ate oatmeal for breakfast every day. That was boring so I would add pb, maple syrup, brown sugar, almonds, etc to keep it fun. I always tried to add in a protein. Lunch was usually leftovers or a sandwich or wrap. Baked potatoes are good and easy too if you bake the night before and just microwave. With winter coming, soup might be good. Trail mix, almonds, fruit, and power bars or clif bars are great snacks while BFing. I only drank water, apple juice, and mothers milk tea. GL and congrats on your LO!

  • Hard boiled eggs, almonds, turkey/ ham sandwiches, and pretzels with hummus is what I lived off of the first two-three weeks.  I was able to prepare a well balanced dinner every night from the day I came home from the hospital (assuming I was not too lazy)- DS choose 3-5pm to nap and I since I would nap until noon I was wide awake during that nap time so I would make dinner.

  • I loved having lots of granola bars and trail mix on hand, things that I could keep on the coffee table or in DD's room.  I also love cereal so I made sure to have several boxes and milk for an easy meal. Just have lots of what you like to eat.  If friends or family offer to cook meals, take them up on it, as you probably won't have time to cook.  Put your DH in charge of dinner, have him get/make extra so you have leftovers :)

  • Some babies are sensitive to milk and soy protein that you eat, so I would recommend keeping dairy and soy food to a minimum at first, until you and baby get into the groove. My DD never had any issues but DS does better when I avoid dairy. Good luck!
