Cloth Diapering

Differences in cloth diapers?

My husband and I are looking into using cloth diapers. I have done some research online and was surprised at all the different types. What has or does anybody use or recommend to try? We have awhile to decide but I like to plan ahead. Thank you so much for your help!!

  • My faves are prefolds and covers. The old tried and true old school kind. I also like fitteds and covers, pockets, and AIO's. For the fisr few weeks it's cheaper to just get 3 dozen newborn prefolds and 6 covers. Then switch to a good mix. If you plan on daycare invest in pockets and all in ones.

  • My daughter is 9 months old. We prefer pockets for nighttime and a combo of pockets and prefolds or stay dry inserts and covers for daytime.
Different things work better for different people.

I haven't cloth diapered a newborn yet but I've read that prefolds or fitteds and covers are the way to go for them.

Check with the daycare you are going to use on this.  I asked the daycare where I plan to take ds2 in the spring and they don't care which type/style of cloth diapers are used as long as they go home every night.

  • I haven't used them yet but prefolds + covers are great for the price, we're going to use those during the days and pockets overnights when they fit so it's easier to change her when I'm all zombie-like.
  • I haven't CD'd a newborn because I didn't start with my DS until he was 5 months old but I have a combination of prefolds/covers and pockets.  Disposable diapers are included in the cost if my daycare so I don't have to worry about daytime diapering during the week.  I use prefolds during the day (weekends) and pockets for nighttime use.  I would have went with all pockets but decided to go the more economical route with the prefolds too.

  • I haven't cloth diapered a newborn, but did start cloth diapering when my baby was about 4 months old.

Currently I am using mostly pocket diapers. I did a trial and found that Babykicks pocket diapers worked really well for us and their "basic" pocket diaper is really reasonably priced. It was one of the few pocket diapers that was really trim enough to fit between our daughter's chunky thighs. I've been really happy with them.

I originally wanted to go with prefolds and covers and did a diaper trial with a bunch of different types of diapers, prefolds, AIO, fitted, pockets... I found that my daughter pooped so much that with the prefolds, it would always get out and onto the cover, even if I snappi'd it. So I kind of figured at that point, given that she pooped around 5 times a day (crazy I know!), I'd have to get so many covers in case they got pooped on that I'd may as well just get the Babykicks pocket diapers. After doing the math it didn't seem like I'd be spending that much more for pockets, and personally I liked them better. And also my baby has really sensitive skin and having a stay dry material in the pocket diapers is great. I actually ended up buying a few prefolds to use as just in case diapers if I was behind on laundry, but I found that she gets a rash whenever I use them and so now I use them as dish rags.

I'd definitely recommend doing a cloth diaper trial if you can - I find that different people just really have different preferences. And what fits one baby sometimes does not fit another. I did all online research and had these ideas of what I would buy - went and did the trial - and the diapers that I saw all great reviews on fit terribly on my daughter! So I think my biggest recommendation would be not to go out and buy a bunch of anything without trying it out first.

  • For a newborn, definitely prefolds/covers, or tiny gDiapers. everything else seems to be too big around their little legs and they leak.

gDiapers were my favorite because I only needed 3 gPants and 12 inserts until baby started walking, then the snaps started pinching her hips when she walked so they were a no-go after 9 months.

Not a huge fan of pockets because I hate stuffing and unstuffing, but I have a couple just so I can get good use out of the gDiaper inserts I already had. So far my favorite brand and style have been the one-size BumGenius AIO's. So nice to just take the whole thing off and wash it. They have enough room to add inserts if you have a heavy wetter.

Probably the best thing about cloth diapers is that they hold their value. So, when you're done you can always resell them for close to the price you bought them for, especially if you take care of them.
