Has anyone else noticed...

In our quest to have unique names, they are all becoming common?  Isabella, Sophia, Lucia, Evelyn, Ainsley...all of these names were uncommon (but not unheard of) five years ago.  I met more than one of each of these in the last three days, all UNDER the age of two (four Evelyn's, all called Evie).  Isn't it funny how names come in and out of popularity!

I think Evelyn is this generations Jennifer!

  • Hayley's middle name is Evelyn - after my grandmother who passed the year before). I actually hated the name cuz I always thought it sounded old (well - Gram WAS old ha!) and now it's so popular!

I always say "Hayley Evs" - but if it were her 1st name - I'd probably call her Evie. My pappap called gram "Ev" which is probably why I say "Evs"

  • My grandma's name was Ethel...pretty sure I'm never going to use that one!

  • I love the name Ainsley, but I would never use it because of it's popularity.

But Sophia has been popular for awhile. It was the 6th most popular name five years ago, and it's been in the top 50 for at least 12 years.

With DD, I got rid of all names on our list that had been in the top thousand in the past 12 years (ssa site).

I used that too. DH liked Madison though and that's #6 I think.

FINALLY!!  My name is Evelyn and when I was young, I thought it sounded weird!  I was embarrassed by it so much that I actually lied about it once and told all the neighbourhood kids my name was ... you guessed it ... Jennifer!!  haha

No one ever actually said it was a weird name.  It was something I imagined up myself, I guess.  I love my name now and I've gotten many compliments on it.

A little tidbit of info - Evelyn was apparently a male's name at one point.  Huh.

  • I agree, it is getting harder and harder to find "unique" names that are not crazy or made up. DD1's name is pretty uncommon and so I dont want a very common name for #2. It's so much harder to come up with a name this time around.

  • I pushed hard for Sophie or Sophia but H vetoed because it was too common then he was fine with Olivia, which I think is even more common. I don't think Natalia is very common but Natalie seems to be and people use that name by mistake all of the time. Drives me nuts!

ETA Not that I don't like the name Natalie, it's just not her name!

  • I grew up with the dreaded Most Popular Name (in my high school year of 45 girls, there were five Jennifers!). My husband on the other hand, grew up having an extremely unusual name. We went with 'not terribly usual but not unknown' wit Rowan, and just had fun with middle names (she has two, the second middle name? Danger.)

  • My name hasn't been in the top 1000 in like 20yrs. I don't know why (Shana- I pronounce it like it rhymes with Donna).

All the names I seem to like end up being in the top 40 when I look. I hope we have a girl next and I really like Emma, but it is in the top 10. I am starting to wonder if I care.

  • My daughters name is Alyssa. A friends mom told me that Alyssa was too popular and boring. We asked her 10 year old how many Alyssa's she knew, not a single one. She has tons of friends named 'Maddie' for Madison and Madelyn.

  • I love Alyssa! I would have used that for Allison by it sounded so bad with our last name. It is such a beautiful name.
