Antibiotics and BFing

LO is almost 4 months and was diagnosed today with a double ear infection. They gave her amoxicillin. Do I need to do anything to prevent a yeast infection? I always eat yogurt on antibiotics, but she hasn't started any solids yet. WWYD?

Re: Antibiotics and BFing

  • You can give her a probiotic, not within an hour or 2 of the amox. Ours usually recommends BabyGaia, but I use Solaray because we needed dairy free. And our pedi recommends a diaper cream of equal parts maalox, aquaphor, and lotrimin once or twice per day.

Even if you don't do the diaper mix I would suggest regular cream every time to prevent irritation.

Poor baby, should feel better in 24 hours. My 6mo luckily hasn't had one yet but my 2yo has had a few. I'm normally stingy with pain meds but I always give them for ear infections.

  • DS had amoxicillin a few weeks ago for an ear infection too. It made him poop frequently so make sure you change his diaper frequently and use a cream or powder. I didn't take anything or give him anything to prevent thrush and so far we've been ok.

This. We didn't do anything and haven't had any problems.
