Breastfeeding

One side per feeding?

My LO is 12 weeks and I've noticed over the last week or so she switched to only using one breast per feeding. Is this ok? I'm concerned she's not getting enough since shes back to eating every two hours and that she may only be getting foremilk. I pumped today for the first time in three days and I only got 3 oz combined and from one breast it was creamy and the other breast it looked like skim milk.

Re: One side per feeding?

  • In nearly 2.5 years of nursing, I've always fed on only one side per feeding. Totally fine!

  • Perfectly fine to feed off of only one side. I try and do that with my DD who is 5 months old and we've need doing that since 3ish weeks.

At 12 weeks your supply has probably settled down. A typical amount to pump after a feeding is 0.5 to 1.5oz and if you are replacing a feeding it is 2.5 to 4oz. So 3 oz sounds about right to me. It sounds like you pumped pretty close to after a feeding. I'm suspecting the side that produced the creamier milk was the side you nursed off of right before so it was mostly hind milk. While the side that wasn't so creamy had more foremilk due to not being used in that feeding. It's normal and nothing to worry about. It can ever be normal if you're pumping to replace a feeding since most women have one side that produces less milk but that milk will have a higher fat content than the higher producing side.
  • Thnk you all do much for the info I feel better now :]
