Once you start, you can't do just one. So, this is a weird boy name question. My H's last name starts with a B. It's tradition that all first born boys in the paternal line have names that start with B. His grandfather was Burt, his dad is Brett, H is Benjamin. The issue is that H's name is pretty much the only B name I remotely like. It's apparently also tradition that the middle name start with R, but H's starts with W, so we're not as worried about that. H isn't dead set on continuing it, but we don't want a ton of family backlash. Our favorite boy name right now is John Leonard nn Jack. So, any B suggestions?

If you don't want to continue with the "tradition" then don't and just let them know it's a choice as a couple you've made and to please respect it.

What about William nn Bill? Is that allowed?
I wouldn't pick a 'B' name just to appease his family. But B names that I like are Bryan, Brice, Brent, and Brandon.
A spin on the tradition may be to find a name you like with a B nn, if there are any. William nn Bill, Robert nn Bobby, etc. (Those aren't my preferred nicknames for those names, but it's just another idea.)

New to the baby names board, just checking it out. I really LOVE the name Brody from the show homeland.
What about Brody Harper?
*oops.. swore it said middle name tradition was h.. how about Brody Ray(e)?
I love Brett and Brady!
That said, all the girls on my H's side have names with J (including a sibset Jan, Jeanne, Joan....). We will NOT be continuing this tradition. I do not like any J girls names well enough, and I don't want sibling girls to all have the same initial letter, so we're nipping it in the bud right away.
If you like the tradition, and find a B name you like, by all means go for it, but don't choose a name you don't love just because of that.

Perhaps Brennan?
I'm not usually into last names as first all too much, however I kind of like the idea of Bennett.
Bryce and Blake are on our short list. I also like Bryson which is a family surname in our family.
If you don't like the B tradition, I wouldn't use it. Ultimately the name decision is yours and DH's. Your DH's family would need to respect it. He will have DH's last name to carry on, correct?
Name your baby what you love!
