Anyone's LO not liking solids?

I have tried cereal, squash, apples, bananas and sweet potatoes so far.  He does not seem to like anything at this point.  He takes one bite and then locks his lips, pushes away spoon.  If I keep trying, he will eventually spit it out at me.  I just keep trying new things hoping he will like something.  This is a new experience for me since his older brother loved food right from the start.  Anyone else experience this?

Re: Anyone's LO not liking solids?

  • It could just be that he is not completely ready to start solids?  I would just offer once a day for a little while until he is really interested.  He might just be a late bloomer with liking solids Wink

  • The other thing you can try is adjusting the thickness and temperature. My LO doesn't like her food warm, she only likes room temperature or cool and she doesn't like it too thin or too thick. If I don't get it right she spits it back at me.

i also find I have to get the timing right. Last night I tried feeding her at 5:30 and she didn't want it. I tried again at 6 and she ate nearly all of her avocado.

  • This is what my daughter was like at first with solids. We started at 4 months and she probably wasn't quite ready. She didn't really enjoy them that much, with the exception of refried beans haha. Now she's beginning to enjoy them more. Maybe he just prefers mommyflavor for a while longer

  • I mix a little rice in with whatever she is eating and she eats it room temp or cold out of the fridge--but she does the same with bottles.  She loves green beans and peas.  She cries when I give her bananas and peaches.  Her daycare teacher said it takes about 7 times trying with food to get them to like some of it.  Not sure how true that is but we are going to kep trying.

  • You need to introduce the same thing up to ten times before a baby will like something sometimes. By introducing so many things its probably confused your lo.
Also my Lucas hates to be spoon fed but if I put a glob of thick puree in front of him he'll grab it and eat it all. If I spoon feed the same thing he hates it.

  • This is us. We tried solids for about 3 weeks once a night and he never seemed interested at all (tried avocado/peas/sweet potato/turkey). I finally just decided to give it a break for a few weeks. We might try again in December. He is at a good weight and is EBF so I'm going to just going to chill out about it till he seems like he really wants it.

  • DD is just starting to really like to eat, it took several weeks. It is still hit or miss though. I always give her some food she can eat with her hands and then we spoon feed as well sometimes. She just 'got' the spoon thing the other night after watching DH. He would take a bite and make it all theatrical and funny and then she would take a bite. She seems to enjoy it more when we are eating too. Timing is big, if she just nursed or is too hungry dinner time is a disaster!

  • Thanks for all of the great advice and glad to hear I am not alone.

I try a different food every 5-10 days. I did not try everything all at once. I tried mixing breast milk with it hoping he would like it a little more but he still spit it out.  I found warming it did help one night but not the next.  I usually feed him in between bottles so he is not starving.   I have tried puting some on his tray and have let him hold the spoon, trying to get him interested.  A combination of everything helps to get some solids in him.  Based on everyone's response, this is normal and I just have to be patient and keep trying.  Thanks again!
