TTC After a Loss

New and have a few questions

On Wednesday I started to experience cramping and bleeding. My hcg levels were in the 300s while I was told I was 8 weeks. I returned to the ER yesterday because the bleeding increased and so did the cramping. My hcg levels are down to 150.
I am experiencing "inevitable miscarriage" according to my discharge paperwork. I am devastated and feel empty and heartbroken. DH has been amazing through it all. I am trying to take comfort in knowing there is nothing anyone could do to stop the outcome.

How long after a loss is safe to ttc?

I know emotionally everyone is different but i am wondering if there are any physical restrictions?

Also how soon should I expect my cycle to return?

TIA

Re: New and have a few questions

  • Welcome, I'm very sorry for your loss. I know this is a scary and emotionally very difficult time, but some of the things you said concern me a little bit...

Everyone is different when it comes to how long it takes for bleeding to stop and AF to return.

Did the doctors not give you any information about tracking your HCG down to zero? If not, I would recommend you contacting your regular OB. It's important to follow HCG levels after loss and monitor your progress to make sure there is no retained tissue.

Advice as to when to start TTC is also very dependent on your individual situation... that too is probably another question for your Doctor.

I would advise you to rest over the weekend, be sure to drink plenty of water and call your Doctor's office on Monday. I would also suggest you check out our blog, https://www.ttcalblog.blogspot.com/ , there is lots of awesome info for new members there.

All of what soprano said. I wanted to add that my doctor did not see a reason to track my HCG down to zero, but I like to know whats going on with my body so I used FRER hpt tests ( one of the most sensitive) to test weekly until I got a negative. My period returned 6weeks (ish) after my d&c. ( A few days after I finally got a negative.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I'm glad your DH is being supportive and as sorry as I am that you find yourself here, I'm glad you found us. This board is an amazing source of support and information and I hope you find some comfort here. You are absolutely right that you did nothing wrong, but I know its hard to find comfort in that.

All of us here are in different phases of TTCAL. Some were given the green light right away, and some of us were told to wait a few months. Everyone is different and only you and your doctor can make that decision. Everyone's cycle is different too. It took me 6 weeks before AF arrived, but others seem to go right back on schedule. Sorry thats not much help. Just be gentle with yourself for a few days, and call your OB.

    Welcome to the board.

First, I am sorry for your loss.
You should ask your doctor when it is safe to try again. My doctor requested at least one cycle, but said it would be fine if something happened in the meantime. This is not case for everyone. I also did not have any physical restrictions, other than being told to "take it easy" the weekend it happened. On average I believe your cycle will returnnbsp;innbsp;4 to 6 weeks. Mine returned about 4 weeks later. Again though, everyone is different.
These are all things I would discuss with your doctor.
    nbsp;

Does anyone have any suggestions on questions I should ask my doctor? I have my 8 week appointment scheduled for Wednesday with an OB and the ER doctor recommended I keep it.

  • Basically the exact same thing soprano said. Everyone has to wait a different amount of time based on their situation. My doctor told me to wait two cycles, others say one, or even more. I am so sorry for your loss but glad you've found this board.

  • I can't offer any better advice than PP have given. I'm sorry for your loss and welcome.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. Welcome to the board. I agree with the ladies above that you should discuss your questions with your doctor, as each person's situation is different.

I think you've gotten some good advice. I would go to your appointment with questions prepared to discuss how long you should wait to TTC and how long to restrain from sexual activity for sure. I was lucky, after both of my losses, my cycle went back to the way it had always been. That's not the case for everyone. My Dr. said 4 to 8 weeks for AF and both times it came in 4 weeks. Good luck and welcome to the board!

    the advice we got
From the ER doctor when asking about sexual activity was "if you feel comfortable having sex now, there's no reason not to because there isn't a baby to harm anymore." this is what I was told while being discharged.
