Clothing size for twins?

Hi Ladies,

I've started buying clothes for my February twins, but am having trouble with sizing. I haven't had any PTL issues, but understand that they could still come early. I was planning on getting 1 to 2 preemie outfits each, but how much of newborn vs 03 months should I get? When did your multiples grow out of newborn size?
Thank you!

Re: Clothing size for twins?

  • Don't have an answer for ya, but am very interested to read responses.....I have a bunch of 0-3 mo outfits and a few newborn ones.....and I'm wondering if I should buy any more newborn or even any preemie outfits just in case....like OP, even though I also haven't had any PTL issues, you just never know.....and it seems from the growth scans that my LOs are peanuts.

  • My girls were born at 36w6d (6lb 15oz and 6lb exactly) and didn't wear preemie size clothes at all.  I'd suggest buying a few things but keep the tags and receipts so you can return them if necessary.  I'd probably wash and have some newborn stuff ready but babies grow so fast those first few weeks, I would make sure to have more 0-3 month size than newborn.

  • I bought 6premie but only washed 4. They wore them a few weeks, and newborn. They wore newborn for maybe a month and a half to two months. 0-3 until abt 3 months. They were born at 37w1d at 7.3 and 7.9.

  • Mine are 2 months tomorrow and still fit in newborn, although DD can also wear 03.
  • My boys were born at 34 weeks (4lb 10oz and 17 in) and wore preemie size for about 30 seconds. NB was big on them for a couple weeks, but much better than their legs being crammed up. Based on their weight gain, I think my boys will be in NB for 3-4 more weeks.

I would get a few preemie outfits and wait until after they are born to buy more. NB I would get 6-8 pjs each and 10 onesies each for underneath since your babies will be here in colder months. I also have 4-5 pairs of pants for each. This would get me through a week without doing laundry, even though I do it every other day.

  • We didn't have any premi sizes when they were born (@ 36 weeks). One of them fit fine in the newborn size, but the other one was swimming in it. We did run out and grab a few premi onesies for him and that was plenty. They spend so much of those early days swaddled in blankets that I doubt you'll need much. I'd be really surprised if you'll go through 12 premi outfits each.

We got the most use out of the footed one piece jammies (sleep and plays?). They are so much easier than whole outfits.

Oops. I meant to say I was planning to buy 1 OR 2 preemie outfits...definitely not 12!!
  • Mine were born at 36w1d, but had IUGR and were pretty tiny 4lbs13oz and 4lbs15oz. They were in preemie for about 10 days and newborn until 7 weeks. They are in 03 now and swimming in them!

I second the sleep and play suggestion. That's what my boys wear. So much easier than over the head outfits.

  • We didn't have any premie things except 2 sleepers someone bought for us...we squished them into them once in the hospital and that was it! Wore newborn for about a month and then 0-3 for a good while...I would go with more 0-3 and sleepers for sure!!! Outfits are not worth the trouble!

ps my boys were 6-1 and 6-11

  • Mine were born at 38 weeks 4 data at 6lbs 3 oz and 6lbs 7 oz. Newborn sizes were swimming on them and I wound up putting them in some preemie clothes the first week. The preemie sleepers were too short, but preemie onesies fit them great. Besides that, newborn being big wasn't a big deal and they've grown into it. They'll be eight weeks soon and are just starting to be able to fit into some 0 to 3 month clothing in certain brands for the length they're still skinny little peanuts but are still mostly in NB size.

  • My boys were born at 35 wks, weighing 5 lbs 7 oz and 6 lbs 10 oz. preemie clothes were big on them at first and I him I had them in newborn clothes around 3 months or so. Even now at 9 months they wear 6 month clothes.

  • Thanks for all of the input! I guess I'll only wash half of my newborn sized stuff so far that's mostly what I have, and I can wash or exchange the rest once they come, depending on their size.
  • I have way too much clothing I am sure. My girls are not here yet, but this is what I have: No preemie clothes. I do have some Newborn onesies and yoga style pants that look really small though. I have 9 footed sleepers each and about 10 onesies, each. For 0-3 I have about the same and have not bought any 3-6 month yet.

Most of what I bought was gently used or was a free hand-me-down. I did buy some of the sleepers on sale. I have laundry issues though. I live in a second story condo and do not have private laundry so it's not like I can throw a load in at any time. I can only do laundry about once (maybe twice) per week.

I do have a question though... is 0-3 closer to 0 or to 3 months in size? Do babies wear 3-6 for up to six months? And what if the sleeper is just marked as a 6 month size? Is that 3-6 or 6-9?

  • My twins were born at 38 weeks and weighed 6.1 and 6.13 so they were in preemie clothes for less than a month and I had few premmie outfits.Mostly 0-3 and at the moment at 4 months.Twin A is in 6 and 9 month clothes and twin B is in 3 and 6 month clothes.

So you may have a size difference to consider as well.

You'll find that sizes vary depending on the brand, but in general 0-3 months is the same as 3 months and can usually be worn until the baby is 3 months old. 3-6 months is the same as 6 months and can usually be worn until 6 months. But that's just a general guideline.

Melle, what I've been noticing is that sizing varies widely by brand.  I was only going to wash 0-3 stuff to start but when looking through some of my 6 month stuff it looked really tiny!

  • Mine will be 11 weeks tomorrow. They are currently in 03 or 3 months. They were born at 38w at 6 10 and 6 6. They wore newborn for prob 7ish weeks and then started moving into 03. They never wore preemie. I never even bought any because I figured I could send my mom out for some if we ended up needing them.

  • My boys were born at37 wks and 4 days and weighed 6 15 and 6 13 and i just put nb clothes on them! Some were a little big but they grow so fast! It also depends on the brand of clothes .... some run small and some run big!

  • Mine were 5lbs13oz and 6lb4oz and were in preemie clothes for about 2 weeks. They wore NB size until 3 months, 3 months until 4 months, 3-6 months for about 2 weeks and then they shot right up into 6 months.  They are now 6 months and can still wear their 6 month clothes but we will be moving into 6-9 months very soon.

ETA: If your babies are born on the small side, Gerber clothing is your friend.  It is sized REALLY small.  Gerber NB stuff is really more like preemie size. I found that most other brands were pretty much sized more like they should be.

  • My twins were born at 35w6d at 4,8 and 4,10. We had no preemie clothes, but family went out and bought us some. I would say they were in preemie for at least a month, but could fit in some newborn. We got a lot of milage out of NB clothes, one twin is still in some!!
Lots of natural cycles, 2 IUIs, and 3 IVFs later, our miracle girl/boy twins were born 08.04.12 at 35w6d. We are in love!

Mine were born at 36 weeks and were 5.1 and 4.12 at birth and we had a similar experience. They were in preemie stuff for quite a bit and only last week did I clear out the rest of the 0-3 month clothes finally. They fit best in 3-6 month clothes but some smaller 6-9 month stuff fits them now. They're just small babies. You never really know what size they'll be when they're born or how fast they'll grow. I wish that I hadn't washed everything because we have a ton of rompers and summer clothes in the 6-9 month size that they never used.

  • My boys were born at 37w6d weighing 6lbs10oz and 6lbs7oz. I had about 2 preemie outfits each and plenty of NB and 0-3. The NB were HUGE on them at first. I don't know if it's because they were relatively thin for their lengths (19.75" and 20") or what but their arms would just fall out of the armholes on NB clothes so Preemie actually fit them better at first even though they were a little short. That was for the first 3 weeks, then they wore NB till they were 2m and then 0-3 for about 6-8 weeks and then moved into 3-6m after that. They gained weight so fast those first 3 months that we really could not have skipped any of those sizes though so I'm glad we had what we did. A kind friend sent me at on of her son's preemie clothes that helped in those early weeks.
