Pregnant after 35

Hi

Hi All! Just wanted to introduce myself.  I'm 35 and pregnant for the first time.  DH and I are over the moon happy!  A little nervous too!  Went for my first pre-natal this week and said yes to the amnio.  Now, I'm not 100% sure if I should get one... Anyone else in this boat?

Re: Hi

  • Welcome and good luck!

I did not get an amnio b/c the other less invasive testing I did came back within "normal" range.  I think that's the case with most of us on here.  Did your OB suggest it right away just based on your age?

  • My husband is 50 and I'm 35 so she said it was up to me.  I initially said yes, but now I'm not so sure.  Think I'm going to wait to see how the initial less invasive tests go first.  DH has 2 healthy children from his first marriage, so OB wasn't too concerned about this baby. Basically said it's up to us.

  • I did the first tri screening (NT + bloodwork) and the MaterniT21 blood test to check for trisomies. Everything came back negative so we decided not to do an amnio. We wanted to avoid invasive testing if possible.

  • First congrats with your pregnancy. I'm 39 and said No to the Amnio. I just didn't want to stress myself or baby throughout my pregnancy. I will deal with what comes when it comes but hope for the best.

Good luck to you and have a wonderful pregnancy

  • Thanks ladies :) I don't want to make any wrong or uninformed decisions.

  • It's actually quite surprising to hear your OB asked you about getting an amnio without first seeing results from less invasive tests. Definitely do the NT scan + bloodwork first. Then (or in my case at the same time), the new trend is to do a Materni21 test *instead of* an amnio or CVS. You get the same percentage accuracy/confidence but via bloodwork instead of the invasive procedure. Good luck and H&H pregnancy to you!

  • I had the testing done after my ultra-sound showed some abnormalities.

I would start with the ultrasound side...if things look great you can always decline further testing.   To be honest...the amnio was quite painful.

  • Welcome, congrats and GL!

I did not do the Amnio b/c my screening tests all came back normal. I'm not sure even if I did have an abnormal I would do it. They have a lot of non-invasive blood tests (Harmony/MaterniT21) that can get close to the same results.

This was me too.  The Harmony/MaterniT21 have no risk to the baby.  The amnio has small risks.  I was not willing to take even a small risk.  If something would have come back as abnormal then I would have to revisit the amnio.

  • I'm 41 and pregnant with my first as well.  I'm seeing a peri doc as well, and having extra tests done, but no one has mentioned doing an amnio yet.  I'm hoping that's one thing I can live without.  Make sure they have a good reason to do one, I'm not sure just being AMA is a good enough reason.
  • No did not go for the amnio, the other tests came back normal range so I did not want to go with the invasive testing either.  Good luck and we will all cross that bridge when we have to.   Congrats and enjoy your pregnancy.
