Ha see my problem is not putting the mittens on, it is KEEPING them on. Even the thumb-less ones that clip to her coat, she undoes in about 0.5 seconds.
You can buy mittens that open up wider with a velcro catch over the wrist or a zipper. We got ours at MEC (like REI only canadian). Then you have enough room inside the mitten to reach in and slide your LO's thumb into the mitten. If it is mild weather we also have some thin cheap mitts that are made out of stretchy fabric so you can pretty much just do the same thing with.
The ones we have are sort of like this. They are warm and stay on well.
Hand together through the cuff, then I tell her "STICK OUT YOUR THUMB!" and I work the mitten over it. I use VERY CHEAP MITTENS though, to be fair, so it's easy to find her thumb.
